  1. Hey all,

    Jeff Jones here.

    I'm still around...mostly lurking though.

I just thought I'd drop a note here to let people know that I am entering the world of solo performance this Tuesday night.

    It's a whole big thing.

For those who enjoy such musical excursions please come out and see.

    What do I sound like???

    I've been called a "post-modern troubadour"...that sounds snotty though.

I like to call it 'quirk-rock'.

    Mike Doughty meets Ani Difranco

    Also,

It a pretty cool little venue.

    Where: The Free Times Cafe

    320 College Street

    (North side...just west of Spadina)

    Toronto

When: Tuesday, January 9 at 9:00 pm

  2. Jaimoe,

The RC 20xl goes for about $319

at Long and McQuade this week.

    I have a boomerang...cool!

I have the Line6...also cool but different it also has supercool delay sounds (can't be used simultaneously).

The Boss is the only unit I know that stores multiple loops indefinately. That's kind of a cool feature if you're playing solo.

Let us know what you get.

  3. Simon's guitar level varied.

During the new song "Mike Post Theme" (my favorite of the new) his electric was actually quite prominent--as he was the only electric guitar in that song.

Mostly he played rhythm (just chords mostly) and could only be sort of heard when Pete did solo-y bits.

He joined the band before the 2002 tour. He was supposed to compensate for John's degenerating vocals. When John died on the eve of that tour he remained.

  4. The writing genius of Sorkin is...

-effortless to watch but incredibly engaging

    -intelligent

    -extremely funny

-an education if you are interested.

He has often said that when he runs into a block he consults Aristotle's Poetics and the solution is always there. I truly believe (as an aspiring writer) that the rules of storytelling were discovered by Aristotle 2500 years ago---and they haven't changed since. Humans is humans is humans...

    Sorkin knows this...

I wish more of today's writers did.

  5. The main difference is that "The Dead" are not proclaiming to be the Grateful Dead, nor are have they dwindled to two surviving members and one of them being deaf. Also having said that every time I go to a "The Dead" show I always consider it the best Dead cover band in the world. I am in no way expecting a "Grateful Dead" show. The Who never make that distinction. Furhtermore "The Dead" are not charging the insane prices "the Who" are.

Do you have any idea how silly and superficial this point is?

Do you want a great show or a puritan experience?

Do you think anyone other than a total deadhead understands that the members of "The Dead" arent "The Grateful Dead" but they're like "The Grateful Dead". It's just that "The Dead" have this great respect for the defacto former leader of "The Grateful Dead". So, when he died (despite the deaths and departures of numerous other members) they thought it was a nice tribute, yet not insulting to rename the band "The Dead" instead of "The Grateful Dead" even though most fans called them "The Dead" even when they were "The Grateful Dead". (And don't get me started on Furthur and the Other Ones)

How much time do you think a casual fan has?

    Plus,

Any big fan of the Who knows that Townshend has spoken to the issue of the "who" not really being the "Who" anymore at great length.

and... until 2002 they had 75% of their founding line-up. Now they have half...

but they also currently have 60% of their line-up since 1977.

Does anyone have these stats for "The Dead"?

    More importantly...

    I saw this line-up in 2002.

And I do not give this review lightly...

(having seen Clapton, Stones, U2, AC/DC, Rush, Springsteen, Phish, The Dead, DMB, Tom Petty, and a half bazillon other bands)

THERE IS NO OTHER ROCK SHOW LIKE THIS ROCK SHOW.

It could be just Townshend...but I tend to think that his genius is tied to having Daltrey out front. Like with Daltrey there he can let himself go.

Mabye don't spend $200...but go see this band.

  6. Hey,

When I first saw the Rheos in 1996 at the green sprouts music week all ages show I was skeptical.

I had "Whale Music" and "Introducing Happiness" and I didn't know how they we're going to presume to pull off those albums live.

They opened with "Fan Letter to Micheal Jackson"--and it turned my frickin hair around.

    Prog-folk meets psychadelic metal!!!

I never could have imagined that four people could make that kind of controled chaotic beauty.

When they were on they sounded like Pink Floyd, Yes and Stompin Tom rolling down a set of stairs together and somehow managing to land on the downbeat.

I quickly realised that all the album production was their way of dealing with the fact that their live show was, at its best, completely uncapturable.

That was a serious Saturday afternoon.

Not every Rheos show I ever saw was like this--but a few were. That's more than I can say for most.

I'll miss them if they go.

  7. Hey,

In addition to being a big fan of Glengarry Glen Ross (...I saw the Alan Alda/ Liev Schrieber production last summer in NYC) I think his film State and Main is absolute genius. His script for "The Untouchables" is just amazing--it makes Kevin Costner seem like an actor. The beauty in his work for me is that he truly understands how to "trigger" a character through dialogue. His characters speak in riddles or half-truths or frailties or from confusion and somehow this cohesive beautiful work emerges from it.

    I love it.

I may take in this soulpepper show.

On another note, the writing Mamet has done about Theatre, film and drama is also brilliant and visionary. The books "True and False"(about acting), "Three Uses of the Knife" (about why humans need dramatic works and how they work) and "On Directing Film" (self-explanatory) are great.

  9. Respectfully disagree. While the Ladies may be a competent quirky POP act. A jam band, or improvised music band they are not. I don't see why they are on Nugs.net. Wrong scene.

    My 2 cents.

    Hey,

I'll resist the temptation to ask how you know better than nugs.net what's good for it.

...but I have to say this...

The Ladies improvise as part of EVERY show. They are also startlingly good at it. At every show, they compose, in real time, at least one (sometimes two or three) song(s) on stage. They range from silly to quite cool. Listen to shows form one night to the next if you don't believe.

Their improv sections are not the same as a typical jamband, but what's typical?

    The Dead?

    Phish?

    Umphreys?

    Nero?

    Leo Kotke?

Fairly radically different musical styles I would say.

    Jef

P.s.In the past 10 years when I've tried to hip a BNL fan to Phish or even the dead the most common negative response has been that it is too "quirky". Funny...

Maybe it's just the difference between an open mind or not.

  10. Hey...

    I don't know...

I'm starting to get very frustrated by people who seem personally offended (not that anyone in THIS thread did) when something they like evolves.

Enjoying something is not the same as owning it.

I've felt this way about reactions to post-hiatus Phish, Trey, the Dead...am I alone here? Enjoy the ride, people. It'll be over too soon anyway.

    Jef

P.s.-I'm extremely excited about Bonnaroo '06
