h
Ecstasy plus Viagra equals danger, cops say Nov. 14, 2002 Provided by: Sun Media Written by: ANDREA SANDS EDMONTON -- Mounties fear "sextasy" tablets - a combination of ecstasy and Viagra - could be the next illegal drug fad to sweep across the country, says a Vancouver drug awareness cop. "Whenever you think you've seen it all, you haven't," said RCMP Cpl. Scott Rintoul yesterday. Wayne Jeffery, head of toxicology for the RCMP forensics lab in Vancouver - who works with Rintoul - said ecstasy users have started popping a Viagra pill at the end of the night because ecstasy increases desire, but causes impotence. But Jeffery said the combination can cause heart problems, or priapism - a prolonged and painful erection. "It may cause permanent erection, and the only way to prevent that actual gangrene doesn't set in is to have surgery." Rintoul said he's never seen Viagra at an indoor rave, but cops have seen many tablets at outdoor raves, where partygoers often camp out. And Viagra was discovered in powder form last February when police shut down a small chemical lab that was manufacturing ecstasy and methamphetamines, he said. "The fact that we saw Viagra at a chemical lab, that's concerning to us. Is there a movement in the underground to actually produce a sextasy tablet?" he said. Vancouver RCMP first saw Viagra circulating among ecstasy users in the summer of 2001, when they worked five large outdoor parties near Chilliwack, Rintoul said. "I think it will still gain popularity because of media attention, but at the same time it's important we get the message out - this practice is very, very dangerous." Los Angeles Police Department officer Clark John said the practice - known as "stiffy-flipping" - is also dangerous because it combines sometimes unknown drugs. "Each time they do that, it can bring complications."
