Refund available to fans turned away

COVENTRY -- Fans who turned away at the direction of police because the site of last weekend's Phish festival could hold no more cars will be offered a refund, concert promoters said.

Promoter Dave Werlin said it troubled him that people who obeyed police in turning around lost out on the concert, only to learn that many others reached the concert site by parking and walking to the site.

"It sends a mixed message," he said.

The decision to start turning fans away, which was made by police, came after organizers considered canceling or postponing the show, and determined that cutting off cars would be a better choice, Werlin said.

An estimated 65,000 attended the festival, though Werlin said he doesn't know how many people were there. A count of scanable ticket stubs will eventually give a better number.

Unredeemed tickets, with stub attached, should be sent by mail to the ticket company from which they were purchased.

Those who purchased from Phish Tickets, should sent the tickets to: Phish Tickets, attn: Customer Service, P.O. Box 1911, Charlottesville, Va. 22903.

Those who purchased from Ticketmaster, should send them to: Customer Service, P.O. Box 62429, Virginia Beach, Va. 23466-2429.

People who did not pick up tickets being held at will-call automatically will receive a full refund.

Ticketholders who want their tickets back as a souvenir without the stub should include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

The Newport State Airport had turned into a moonscape by Tuesday afternoon, a smattering of tents and RVs still in place alongside piles and piles of trash. Roads were clear of traffic.

Werlin said the trash left by fans along highways where they walked and drove into and out of the concert will be removed.

"We believe that is our responsibility," he said.
