With one foot in the improvised music scene and one foot in the world

music community, Ima Ensemble references a broad spectrum of musical

approaches from Eastern and Western musical traditions. With these

materials, Ima Ensemble eliminates the temporal divide between

improvising and composing while relying on a unique range of sound and

approaches that span the globe.

The members of Ima Ensemble---Debashis Sinha, Andrew Downing, Ben

Grossman, and Patrick Graham---have all had extensive training in a

variety of world music traditions, and are recognized as some of

Canada뭩 most vital contributors to world music (see attached bios).

They are interested in recontextualizing their instruments and world

music methodologies to create a new music that they term 뱎ost

traditional?--music that is part of the journey of tradition, but

beyond it at the same time.

The group members?ability and training in world music traditions allow

them to draw on highly structured non western rhythmic and harmonic

information, or reference non western concepts in musical performance.

At the same time, Ima Ensemble is creating a performance environment

that also can draw on the pioneering work in free jazz and contemporary

improvised music that has taken place over the last few decades. Ima

Ensemble is one of the few groups in improvised music circles that

focuses on combining these 2 worlds.

The Canada Council for the Arts recognized the great potential of this

new group and the post traditional concept by awarding Ima Ensemble a

recording grant for their upcoming recording. At the mixing board will

be Juno Award winning engineer David Travers-Smith. The CD will be

available on the web and other outlets by early fall.

Be it a live concert or studio recording, the music of Ima Ensemble is

a fresh take on sound and culture, an inevitable extension of the

current state of multicultural and multi-genre music in Canada. It is

a unique voice, full of potential and experimentation. The group뭩

blend of top notch musicianship, deep foundations in world music

traditions, and wild adventurousness creates music that is challenging

and enjoyable for any audience, anytime, anywhere.
