==========================

The first pressing of the Constantines’ self-titled debut released in 2001 was fittingly packaged so that, upon opening the red cardstock booklet, you’d find a single strike-anywhere match. In an effort to not ruin the beauty and poignancy of a thing with a guided tour of its finer points and implications, suffice it to say that if your relationship with rock and roll is not fundamentally a quest for fire (elemental, transformative, consuming), you’ve utterly missed the point. Founded in Guelph, Ontario in 1999, the Constantines now live in Toronto and that first record of theirs landed them a Juno Awards’ nomination for Best Alternative Album. As well, the

album it placed (10th and 4th, respectively) on the year-end top ten lists for both the Exclaim! readers’ poll and the Eye national critics’ poll.

Shine a Light is the Constantines’ second full-length

album on Three Gut Records (it will be released stateside and in

Europe on Sub Pop Records.) The new record is ambitious, combining a steady diet of ‘90s DC rock (like a Joe Strummer-fronted Fugazi, it’s beensuggested), with dub-inflected bass, blue-eyed soul and a fundamental punk, anytime/anywhere aesthetic (perhaps best described by drummer Doug MacGregor as, “Like an unwelcome mix of a

Memphis Clash and breakneck dubâ€).

The opening lines from the title track hint at the difficulty in nailing down the elusive “it†that is at play on this record, “Don’t talk to me about simple things/There’s no such thing/All a man can build is his vision/And I love my man for trying.â€Between these two albums, the band released an EP (The Modern Sinner Nervous Man) on Seattle’s Suicide Squeeze Records and added a keyboard player in Will Kidman.

Also, they played shows:SxSW, NxNE, MichiganFest,Halifax Pop Explosion, New MusicWest, Montreal Pop Explosion, to name a few. And really, that’s the way to experience theConstantines; as they teach audiences how to fully experience the present, that right now - this minute - is all that matters. There may be no alarm clock tomorrow morning because there may be no tomorrow. But, to be clear, there’s no didacticism here. The Constantines are going there with you, celebrating that, if we get it right, we’re none of us going gently into the night. They’re a band with growl and heft, hearts on their sleeves, playing music as if all of our lives hung in the balance. Because, after all, they do.

"The Constantines maintain a feverishly partisan dedication to the wild delirium of rock n ’ roll…air punchingly anthemic" NME

"...once the Constantines start heading off-stage, the "woo hoos" start going off like air-raid sirens. No one's saying it, but everyone's thinking it: we have something to believe in again. The Constantines are the children of Fugazi, stepbrothers to Make-Up and Trail of Dead, the grand-kids of Springsteen and Strummer. They call what they do soul music, not because of what it sounds like, but where it hits you." EYE weekly

The Meligrove Band

454.jpg

Toronto’s Meligrove Band was formed by Jason Nunes, Darcy Rego and Michael Small in high school in 1997. Andrew Scott joined in late 2002 when his previous band, Femme Fatale, gave way to Death From Above 1979. After two critically-acclaimed indie releases (2000’s Stars & Guitars and 2002’s Let it Grow), in 2005 the Meligrove Band became the first Canadian group to sign a worldwide deal with V2 Records. The band’s V2 debut, Planets Conspire, was near-finished before the deal was signed that August.

Planets Conspire was recorded by José Contreras (By Divine Right) in friends' houses and apartments. Often the people living there would go about their daily lives while the band recorded in the same room – plates and glasses clink; a kettle whistles; a dog barks. All of the piano, bass, drums, and some guitar were recorded live, together, to half-inch tape. Later, José spliced the best parts of each take together, and the overdubs were done on four-track cassette and a computer. Jason wrote much of the album himself on the piano at his parents' house, while some songs like “Free on the Air†and “Our Love Will Make the World Go Round†were put together only hours or minutes before they were recorded.

Planets Conspire has garnered massive critical acclaim since its Canadian release. The band appeared on the cover of influential Toronto magazine Eye Weekly, were named first of the “15 Bands That Will Rock You in 2006†by Chart Magazine, and interviews appeared in Exclaim, Now, Dose, Ukula, Toronto Star, Toronto Sun, KW Record, and Echo Weekly. The band was featured on popular TV show E-Talk Daily, and the video for first single “Everyone’s a Winner,†directed by Ante Kovac (Constantines, Thrush Hermit, Tragically Hip) has been added to rotation at MuchMusic. The song has been featured on commercial stations 102.1 The Edge and CIKR-Kingston, and as of this writing, Planets Conspire has reached #2 on Canada’s national college radio chart.

The Meligrove Band’s previous album, 2002’s Let it Grow, received four-star reviews from the Montréal Mirror, Eye Weekly, and more kudos from places as far away as Germany, Spain and Singapore. In 2004 alone, the album sold nearly 1000 import copies in Japan, and reached #1 on Tokyo campus radio. A video for the song “Before We Arrive,†directed by Ante Kovac, achieved plays on MuchMusic’s The Wedge and rotation on MuchMoreMusic. Pitchfork remarked that “their next release will be even better.†And now, the song “Monkey Mask†is featured in Douglas Coupland’s upcoming feature film Everything’s Gone Green.

The Meligrove Band has toured all over Canada, winning fans over with their explosive live show, and sharing stages with the likes of Spoon, Ted Leo, Dinosaur Jr., Constantines, The Mooney Suzuki, Sloan, The Unicorns, Final Fantasy, and the All American Rejects. The band played themselves on an episode of the teen comedy Radio Free Roscoe in 2004. Members of the Meligrove Band have also lent their talents to Toronto pop collective The Bicycles, groundbreaking MC Masia One, and Canadian indie legends By Divine Right.

Andre Ethier (Deadly Snakes)

On his 2004 debut solo record, Andre Ethier expanded on the pre-'70s rock, soul, blues and R&B terrain he covers as part of rock outfit The Deadly Snakes.

And that was inevitable, says Ethier, because, "I can't get too far from myself really. I feel that the things that inspire the songs are somewhat similar, but the approach to the songs is different."

The record-featuring Ethier's long-time pal and pianist Christopher Sandes and rhythm section Pickles and Price-has an authentically lo-fi, under-polished style in order, says Ethier, to catch every flaw.

"I wanted it to sound spontaneous," he explains. "And I didn't want to labour over it. Most of the music I enjoy doesn't
