PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. -- Saskatchewan's oldest woman, a teacher who rubbed shoulders with many famous Canadians, died Friday at the age of 112.

Mary MacIsaac was a guest lecturer at the University of Saskatchewan until nine years ago, and went cross-country skiing until she was 108, said her son, Ron MacIsaac.

She was one of the founders of Co-op Medicine, which later become State Medicine under the provincial government of former NDP premier Tommy Douglas, and then the federal medicare program.

Her son said his mother's friends included Anne of Green Gables author Lucy Maude Montgomery, whose father lived for a time in Prince Albert, and the naturalist and author Grey Owl.

He said Grey Owl even asked his mother to read early drafts of his work.

Born Mary McNair in New Brunswick in 1893, MacIsaac and her husband, Jack, later moved to Prince Albert where they raised their five children.

Following the death of her husband, she moved to Saskatoon in 1984, where she lived until her death.
