AD
Story from Ottawa Sun The fight to be MP for Ottawa Centre may be over, but old wounds remain as a $300,000 defamation lawsuit was filed yesterday on behalf of Richard Mahoney against MP Paul Dewar.Mahoney ran unsuccessfully as a Liberal candidate in the most recent federal election, while Dewar ran for the NDP.The suit, which contains allegations not yet proven in court, alleges Dewar directed or authorized campaign literature to be published with defamatory comments about Mahoney's lobbying activities. The material allegedly printed around Jan. 20, 2006, doesn't refer to Mahoney by name, but refers to the Liberals and "their candidate," the claim says. The claim alleges the literature was meant to convey, among other things, that Mahoney was unethical and was seeking public office for personal benefit.Mahoney's claim says the words injured his capacity as a practising lawyer with the Law Society of Upper Canada.Andrew Davis, Mahoney's lawyer, declined comment on the case.
