Dude, the motion to have him step down was more about his comments about aboriginals and specifically this.

Vellacott says the officers didn't leave Night in the middle of nowhere. He says the drop-off point was only two-and-a-half kilometres from where one of Night's relatives lived.

Vellacott argues Night could have easily walked there.

He also set up a legal defence fund for the officers.

Please note this post in now way represents a spin by Hux in any way to suggest the Liberal Party is gaining on the Conservative Party of Canada in the polls.

A Saskatoon MP is lobbying the province to grant a new trial to two former police officers convicted of unlawful confinement.

Cst. Dan Hatchen and Cst. Ken Munson were sentenced to six months in jail for abandoning Darrell Night on the outskirts of Saskatoon in January 2000.

Conservative MP Maurice Vellacott says that was a miscarriage of justice, and there is now new evidence in the case.

Vellacott says the officers didn't leave Night in the middle of nowhere. He says the drop-off point was only two-and-a-half kilometres from where one of Night's relatives lived.

Vellacott argues Night could have easily walked there.

"These individuals dropped him off in the vicinity close at hand, as opposed to way at some remote distance, so we can quibble about distances, but he wasn't arbitrarily dropped off in the middle of nowhere," says Vellacott.

He says the jury may have reached a different verdict if that evidence had been presented at trial.

But Night's lawyer, Don Worme, points out that four different judges reviewed the case and all of them came to the same conclusion that Munson and Hatchen were properly convicted.

My bad then. The article I linked suggests he stepped down because of the comments he made about Superior Court judges. It doesn't mention his defence of the police officers until the last paragraph.
