Position Title: National Coordinator, Sustainable Campuses

Position:

The Sustainable Campuses Project Coordinator is responsible for the

successful implementation of the Sustainable Campuses Project

including coordination of the Sustainable Campuses staff team,

resource development, external networking, fundraising, budgeting, and

overseeing the planning and implementation of the Annual Sustainable

Campuses Conference.

Project Overview:

The Sustainable Campuses project is currently one of SYC's main

projects. It seeks to inspire, inform, train, and support Canadian

students in the pursuit of social and environmental change on their

campus through the Academia to Action portion of the Sustainable

Campuses project. The goal of the overall project is to make campuses

more ecologically, economically and socially sustainable on

operations, curriculum and campus member attitudes levels. This is

worked toward by SYC supporting the development of campus

multistakeholder processes, campus sustainability assessments and

greenhouse gas inventories and reductions plans. Sustainable Campuses

Project aims to promote a systems approach to changing campus

practices. It promotes students' efforts to work within the systems of

their educational institutions in order to create permanent,

institutionalized mechanisms to ensure sustainability.

Type of work the positions requires:

1. Support, assist and train the five SYC Academia to Action Regional

Coordinators to ensure that the delivery of the programme is in line

with the project goals;

2. Resource development, including hiring contractors to develop

needed resources;

3. Fundraising and budget management and maintaining funder relationships;

4. Strategic Planning coordination for the project;

5. Coordination of the volunteer Project Committee for Sustainable Campuses;

6. Network with organizations and groups with similar missions and/or

goals as the sustainable campuses project;

7. Represent the project and SYC at conferences and event throughout

Canada and the US;

8. Coordinate SYC's involvement in the Canada-US Energy Action Network

(attend meetings and summits);

9. Communications with media, other groups, and within SYC;

10. Active linkage of social justice and environmental issues to

develop a holistic approach that addresses overarching structural

problems and facilitates institutional as well as lifestyle change in

relation to the campus community.

Specific Responsibilities:

9) Communications -- website development and updating, media work, etc.

10) General SYC support

Preferred Qualifications:

* BA or BSC in any field

* Excellent understanding of sustainability

* Excellent understanding of the Sustainable Campuses Project

* Experience working on campus sustainability initiatives

* Technical experience performing sustainability and greenhouse

gas assessments/audits

* Bilingual (french/english)

* Fundraising experience

* Strong facilitation skills

* Ability to work in a non-hierarchical environment

* Strong analysis of anti-oppression and ability to apply analysis

* Strong writing and research skills

* Ability work in flexible work environment

* Strong ability to multi-task

* Experience in public speaking

* Experience managing budget and working with finances

* Understanding of the youth environmental and social justice

movements in Canada

* Strong organizational and project coordination skills

* Experience with management of staff, interns, and volunteers

* Experience as a volunteer or in volunteer-driven organisations

* Past involvement with the Sierra Youth Coalition
