Dr_Evil_Mouse
It looks like Michael Gerson, one of Bush's chief speechwriters, is leaving the White House . I ran across this interview which very candidly sets out from the (real) author's side all the components contained in a standard speech. It reminds me of the image timouse once suggested to me, that the president need not really be more than the chrome dog on the front of the Mack truck. I like Cannon's inclusion of Eisenhower's speech further down for contrast.
