Official forecast for winter from Jerry Garcia, this year's champion in the Woolly Worm Festival: snowy start to winter, followed by cool weather but not a lot of snow. The official word is in – the beginning of the winter will be snowy, followed by cool but not-so-snowy conditions. That is the forecast from Jerry Garcia, the winner in the 29th annual Running of the Worms – the main event from last weekend's annual Woolly Worm Festival in the N.C. mountain town of Banner Elk. Jerry Garcia, the worm "managed" by Kate Berry of Boone, won the race Sunday. That means the rings around the worm are being used for the official winter forecast. The first four rings indicate cold and snowy weather. Those first four weeks are Dec. 21 and 28, and Jan. 4 and 11. The remaining rings show cool weather but not much snow. Organizers of the event say their worm has been uncannily successful in predicting winter weather conditions. The woolly worm is at odds with Appalachian State University computer science professor Dr. Ray Russell, who also puts out an annual winter forecast. Ray's Fearless Forecast calls for a wet winter with temperatures about 1 degree below normal. Russell says a weak El Nino condition will bring wet weather to the Southeast, and a condition called a negative North Atlantic Oscillation will tend to push storms up the East Coast. He says North Carolina often will be on the dividing line between snow and rain. But Russell predicts 50 to 55 inches of snow this winter in Boone, 18 to 22 inches in Asheville, and 10 to 15 inches in the foothills. Those numbers are above normal. Russell does not issue snowfall forecasts for the Piedmont area, including Charlotte.
