You've probably heard this but former Enron CEO Skilling actually got 24 Years.

Skilling was ordered to pay about $45 million in restitution for his crimes out of his assets, some of which were frozen by the U.S. government. Skilling will be paying out almost everything he owns, including proceeds from the sale of his home.

"It will leave Mr. Skilling with virtually no assets, as is appropriate,'' U.S. prosecutor Sean Berkowitz said.

The money, which will be withheld pending Skilling's appeal, will go to the fraud's victims in a restitution fund to be administered by U.S. District Judge Melinda Harmon of Houston, who presides over the civil class action lawsuits against former Enron officers and banks. Skilling will be allowed to pay an additional $15.5 million to his lawyers, whom Berkowitz told the court will "still be out about $20 million.''

The flipside of that is that the fines levied against Ken Lay will not have to be paid, and his conviction will effectively vanish, because he died while his appeal was pending.

His estate can be sued, but only for compensatory damages, not punitive ones.
