THE WAILERS

The Original Legendary Wailers were Peter Tosh, Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer. This night will celebrate this classic Roots Rock Reggae Trio! This trio defined reggae music as a genre and their music is still influencing people all over the world. Such tracks as "Soul Rebel", "Duppy Conqueror", "400 Years" and "Small Axe" were not only classics, but they defined the future direction of reggae. The 3 Original Wailers met in Trenchtown, Jamaica, and that is where the foundation of Reggae and Ska music was built.

The Wailers were a ska, rocksteady, and reggae group formed in Kingston, Jamaica in 1963, consisting of Bob Marley, Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, and Cherry Smith.

They were called variously The Teenagers, The Wailing Rudeboys, The Wailing Wailers, and finally The Wailers. By 1966, Braithwaite, Kelso, and Smith had left the band, leaving the trio of Wailer, Marley and Tosh.

Some of The Wailers most notable songs were recorded together with Lee "Scratch" Perry and his studio band, The Upsetters. In the early 1970s, The Upsetters members Aston "Family Man" Barrett and his brother Carlton (Carlie) Barrett [1], formed the Wailers Band, the backing band of The Wailers.

The Wailers recorded such groundbreaking reggae songs as, "Simmer Down", "Trenchtown Rock", "Nice Time", "Stir It Up", "Get Up, Stand Up", and many others.

The Wailers broke up in 1974, with each of the three main members going on to pursue solo careers. Bob Marley went on to international fame with Bob Marley & The Wailers (with the Wailers Band as the backing band and the I Threes as the backing vocalists). Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer each enjoyed considerable solo success, as reggae music continued to gain in popularity throughout the 70's and 80's. They were supported by their respective backing bands, Word, Sound and Power and The Solomonic Orchestra.

Most of the group's members have since died. Marley died in 1981, Tosh in 1987, Braithwaite in 1999, and Smith in 2008.[2] Bunny Wailer and Beverley Kelso are the only surviving original members of the group.

HOUSE OF DAVID GANG

Formed in Toronto over 15 years ago, the band is fronted by seasoned reggae veteran King Selah, a fixture on the Canadian Jamaican Reggae landscape for two decades. King Selah leads a collective of artists, vocalists, horn players, guitarists, keyboardists and a rock-steady rhythm section. Jah-lin Edwards (drums), Chris & Michael Davies (guitar & keyboards), Snappy (bass) & The High Plains Drifter (lead guitar) round out the current incarnation that sometimes includes the horn section on Mike Field (Trumpet) and Dean Yates (Trombone). The band takes its name from a legendary rooftop apartment on Queen Street West in downtown Toronto; "The House of David" was the after hours spot of choice for the city's burgeoning reggae scene in the late 1980s, a place where members of The Resinators, Explorer Band, Revelation, Selassie I Power, Imagine Rainbow Warriors and special guest touring musicians who performed at The Legendary Bamboo Club earlier that evening would join together and jam late into the night.

House of David Gang recently toured to Eastern and Central Canada with their Annual Bob Marley Birthday & Food Drive tour, which sold out shows in several major markets. They have performed at venues all over Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick & NovaScotia , with a festival resume that includes The Atlantic Jazz Festival (Halifax, NS), The Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival (Fredericton, NB), The Evolve Music and Awareness Festival (Antigonish, NS), Come Together Music Festival (Owen Sound, ON), The Hillside Festival (Guelph, ON), Caribfest (Barrie, ON), Salty Jam (Saint John, NB), The Sunseekers Ball (Saint John, NB) and The Toronto Freedom Festival where they played to an estimated crowd of over 15,000 people in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

The band is currently hard at work in the studio, recording a new EP "Three the Hard Way" with the singles "Three Wise Men of Jamaica", "Reggae Party" and "Don't Make Me Cry." They are receiving regular airplay across Canada and have recently been played as far away as France and Spain. The House of David Gang delivers an uplifting reggae show, spreading the message of the reggae prophets; Love, Equal Rights, Humanity and Self-empowerment. Come join "the Gang"!

JASON WILSON

THE PEACEMAKER'S CHAUFFEUR is the first solo album from the now two-time Juno-nominated Canadian reggae artist JASON WILSON. The multiple award-wining double-disc focuses on various attributes of the human experience in times of both ‘war’ and ‘peace’. The album boasts an impressive array of musical legends who offer Jason a helping hand for a project that was four years in the making. Special guests include: British fiddle legend Dave Swarbrick, Studio One reggae keyboard king the late Jackie Mittoo, James Brown and Van Morrison’s band leading saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis, Aswad’s frontman Brinsley Forde, Jamaican guitar legend Ernest Ranglin, Canadian icon Ron Sexsmith and many, many more.

Pegged by the Canadian media as a “reggae-visionaryâ€, Wilson has recorded and performed with some of the world’s biggest reggae acts including UB40 and Sly & Robbie. An award-winning author (Lord Stanley: The Man Behind the Cup, Fenn Publishing 2006), Wilson has also worked outside the reggae world including collaborations with Alanis Morissette, Percy Sledge and The Mighty Sparrow. No other Canadian reggae artist has toured as much as Jason Wilson in the past ten years and after feature documentaries on CBC Television (THE NATIONAL with Peter Mansbridge) and BBC radio in England (Lively Up Yourself Documentary), this Toronto-born Scottish-Canadian is only now being recognized for his role as a reggae ambassador. In 2007, Wilson was presented The Karl Mullings Memorial Award for commitment to reggae in Canada and this year won a national Doctoral Fellowship for his PhD study in Canadian History at the University of Guelph. Jason is now in the studio recording a full-length album with Dave Swarbrick entitled: THE LION RAMPANT (2010).
