Joel Plaskett Is The Jack Black Of Rock Camp

We told you about Rock Camp way back in July but more details on the CBC series have finally emerged. The show is based on a real-life summer camp run by the Conservatory Of Music In Halifax called Summer Rock, which teaches regular dudes and dudettes how to rock out with the best of ‘em. The show will premier in April on the Ceeb, and will run for seven weeks.

Last spring, the Rock Camp people conducted a national search for rock-worthy teenagers to participate in the show. They found 18 keeners who participated in the camp over the summer. Even better than the kids, though, are the instructors, who include a surprising number of particularly awesome Canadian rock stars. The team is headed up by one-half of Thursh Hermit — namely Joel Plaskett and Ian McGettigan, who will coach the kids in the ways of the rock. Other coaches include Brad Conrad (a member of Matt Mays’ El Torpedo), the Canadian Conservatory’s Pat Riley, voice coach Elise Besler and other Conservatory types.

Since the staff coaches can only cover so much ground, a string of guest stars will also swing by the camp. Robin Black will teach the kiddies the ways of the glam-rock, By Divine Right’s Jose Contreras will share his positive vibes and Gob’s Tom Thacker will teach the virtues of onstage hijinx. Other guests will include Default’s Jeremy Hora, I Mother Earth’s Bruce Gordon, Wide Mouth Mason’s Shaun Verreault, Live OnRelease’s Britt Black, Not By Choice’s Chico, Johnny Lubera from Jersey and Darrin Pfeiffer from Goldfinger.

Of course, no reality show is complete without "the reveal." The Rock Camp kids will form bands, that will compete for a recording session with EMI Music Canada. EMI will service the single recorded during that session to radio stations across Canada. The final episode of the series will be hosted by FUBAR’s Dean and Terry.

Rock Camp makes its debut on CBC TV on April 27. The show will run every Monday and Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. for seven weeks.
