"Legendary Pianist Dick Hyman"

Yesterday in Muskoka, I saw this ad posted:

"Coming to Gravenhurst: Legendary jazz pianist, Dick Hyman."

Seriously? Mr. Hyman goes by "Dick"; not "Richard" / "Rick" / "Ricky"? Imagine this guy introducing himself:

"Dick Hyman, pianist."

"Ummmmm ... What three words did you just say to me?"

Yeah whatta great name...well before it became part of the rude/swearing lexicon(he's old!)

He is a great jazz piano player - and his classic Moog albums were leagues ahead of Wendy Carlos' and others in the 50's. Electric Eclectics has some cool wonky tunes on it - The Minotaur esp. ...oh and the whistling sample from Beck's Odelay was lifted from this album...

Weird that he's doing the resort shows...

I first heard 'Moog: The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman' at a friends place after listening to Super Sessions (Bloomfield/Kooper). Very cool album. 'Give It up or Turn It Loose' is a smoking tune on that album, especially loud.

All jokes aside, this man is a jazz giant. He has played wioth

Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker and Red Norvo to name a few.

Catch this show. Dick Hyman is one of the greatest pianist of the 20th century. He is in the realm of Bill Evans, George Shearing and Oscar Peterson.

Don't miss that show, I've seen him and was blown away.

Check his bio

The show's not until July 27, and unfortunately it's a Monday. I won't be there. Too bad, too, because I believe I will be up in that 'hood on the 26th for "Muskoka Jam", but I won't be able to stay.

At least I have learned that I should look into some tunes by this guy; despite his unfortunate name.

I'm glad I posted this topic, actually.
