Cold Specks and Esther Grey in Guelph tonite

Last minute notice here, sorry, but there is a cool show in Guelph tonite at the River Run Cooperator Hall.

From the blurb ...

Cold Specks is 23-year-old Al Spx from Etobicoke, Canada, who now lives in London. Describing her sound as 'Doom Soul', Cold Specks' music is steeped in the musical traditions of the Deep South. No wonder then that Al cites the Lomax Field Recordings and James Carr as influences along with Bill Callahan and Tom Waits. With a voice that evokes the 'spirit feel' of Mahalia Jackson and the visceral tones of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Cold Specks' sparse arrangements and chaingang rhythms stop you dead in your tracks.

Opening Act

Esther Grey is a Guelph-based guitar and drums duo that serves up dusty garage folk. With an attraction to junk shop instruments and lo-fi sound, Esther draws inspiration from cartoons, dreams, and yard sale paperbacks. January marked the band's first release, an EP on cassette, split with Tyson and his Game Boy.

Super cheap ... $15 ... part of hillside inside:

Thanks for posting, NW. I quite enjoyed the evening, but actually didn't really enjoy her acapella - which made for a significant portion of the show. I did really like her band. The opener was cool too, although a few of us thot the lead singer was justin beiber, until she began singing.
