  1. Well, I'm in Ottawa actually. Saw D&T last night and was super-impressed. I think the drummer tries to show off too much though. It's hard to get funky with really fucked-up beats. Although it's still great to listen to...

I'll be down in TO for some of those Rheos gigs for sure.

  2. If you're gonna be hitting one of the weekend shows in TO I'd get an advance ticket, but for any of the midweek shows I tihnk you'll be fine at the door.

Last year I didn't have tix and ended up seeing 3 of the shows, getting tickets at the door (sat, sun, monday)

jamoie, where did you hear about the ottawa date?

  3. Yup, a love of the Rheos helped me meet lots of good folk (Sean, in particular).

Met Sean for the first time before and during a Fatties show in Kitchener. At the same time I was helping out a bunch of people in SW Ontario get live Phish tapes through my old site (Canadian Phish Tape-Traders). Mike Tamasi was one of those (and by far the coolest). Went to his cottage in Grand Bend a few times where I met Scottie King. Was hanging out with Mike and Scott one day and mentioned the Rheostatics were playing that night in London. I might be wrong, but I don't think Scott or Mike had seen (and heard... heh) them before. At the show introduced Sean and Mike and Scott. History was made, and the meagre crew of Starship Harpua was formed. Sean's girlfriend got too drunk, they had to leave, Sean missed an incredible Junction Foil Ball.

Anyhoo, to answer the question, Rheostatics - Double Live. No other band can hold a candle to the genius in those guys. You Toronto people; take advantage of the Green Sprouts Music Week: Rheostatics every night between November 13 & 24 at the Horseshoe. Wicked times.

    See them at all costs!!

  4. I looked up the Robert Palmer stuff:

The album is called 'Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley', and it starts off with Sailing Shoes-->Hey Julia-->Sneakin' Sally.

Interestingly enough, Lee Dorsey also covered Sneakin Sally. Another one to download... AFTER EVOLVE!!!

  5. Sneakin' Sally is from the Robert Palmer album where he hired Lowell George (Feat, Mothers) and Allen Toussaint (New Orleans legend) to make him sound funkier. Sneakin' Sally is part of a 3-song cycle that is excellent (although I can't remember the other songs right now). I think one is called Julia though.... I'll dig out the CD later... Oh wait: I'm leaving for Evolve later!!!

  6. Scottie: I 'spoke' with Sean today and he'll be at Evolve for sure. (Is Nina coming to? I assume so...) Can't make the road trip to Saint John but it'll be good to see people at the show. I can only get Friday and Monday off work (and I'm working 14 hour days this week so I can go!)

We're leaving Ottawa Thursday after work and are planning on driving straight through.

    Cheers,

  7. On our way to the Vermont Trey show we get to the border and wait a bit. We pull up and the guy at the window asks where we're going while the other guys checks the trunk. We say we're going to Essex Junction for a concert. He says, 'Oh yeah? Is Phish back together or something?" Turns to his partner and says, "Hey! Maybe Mule's in town!"

We're kinda dazed from this turn of events. I'm riding shotgun, and all of a sudden the trunk-searcher is at my window motioning for me to roll it down. I do and he asks what I have in the stereo. I say 'Trey Anastasio Band'. He tells me (with the authority of the American government behind him), 'Turn on track 11 (Last Tube) and crank it!'

We, being meek Canadian tourists, obey fully. They both give us big shit-eating grins and wave us through. By far the easiest and funnest border crossing there ever was or will be.
