    Press:

“Ikebe Shakedown re-creates the kind of vibrant vintage funk that sends crate-digging DJs into spasms of joy…†– TimeOut New York

“I couldn’t help but feel as if I was listening to a modern day soundtrack from the likes of Curtis Mayfield or Willie Hutch. The album carries a certain soulful grit; so much so that it’s easy to get lost in present-day reality. “Is this seriously from 2011?†I often wondered. You see, at its core, Ikebe Shakedown isn’t trying to be funk. It just is…one of the best releases of the year†– OkayPlayer’s Revivalist (9.0 review)

“Ikebe Shakedown has a sound that is undeniably all their own†– KEXP, Seattle

“Tight, hard charging and “Hard Steppin†— doing their thing with abundant classic stateside instro funk influences, too! It says a lot that these guys are making a welcome entry to the east coast scene…†– Dusty Groove America

“Hard Steppin’…is…the perfect soundtrack for the unwritten Tarantino movie of your imagination, and should be listened to while driving fast, preferably towards danger.†– WNYC

“We’re talking serious dance music that makes them stand alone…it’d be good to see them on the European festival circuit†– Gerry Hectic – Fly, UK

“One of the dopest up-and-coming afrobeat bands on the NY scene.†– Marc Amigone – The Afrobeat Blog

“A must have nugget for fans of Fela Kuti/Africa70, The JB’s, or Antibalas.†– boomkat.com

  2. It was an amazing show..

Nice comments describing the club Edge.. It does have a slight seedy vibe but it is owned and run by some really great people. They are old punk-rockers. The sightlines are great and the sound is awesome. Nice little lounge area at the back of the room. Doug the Sound-guy and Mary have moved there from the old PJC.

Plus drinking on the patio and enough space around the club if anyone wants to step away for a smoke..

Of note re this band. I found out the night of, that the sax player is returning this monday in another band called Ikebe Shakedown which I will be posting about shortly. they are a dope afro-beat band also from brooklyn.

  3. This Saskatchewan quintet returns back to TAH with their daunting, dark country sounds. Martin Verrall and Sam Klass warm up the evening. A great way to end the Easter Weekend!

SOS is a LIVE looping madness duo - all sounds are performed, recorded, and manipulated LIVE - take that DJs! Joking - we love DJs!

    Scientists of Sound

"Clunk!! SHWOOSH!! Pling!! BEATS!!!" - "shit what do i do now??? jesus!! it is f’n hot in here!! why does she keep trying to touch my horse face???!!! Arggghh what do i do???!! How about this?? YESSSSSSSSS!!! That is the stuff right there! - and repeat and repeat...

Dirty electro sounds in an improvisational original format that nobody else is doing… Live looping dance madness – in masks – and lab coats… This is the mantra for this Halifax based duo sometimes trio sometimes quattro looping madness unit… Play sound – record sound – manipulate sound until it doesn’t sound like the original sound – and do it all over well crafted original dance tracks and thumpin’ beats… That IS the stuff right there… This is Scientists of Sound…

In the past year SOS have shifted from a side project / fun time project to a bona-fide electro powerhouse on the Canadian music scene… They have performed in every major Canadian market and have been winning fans coast to coast in the process… They have shared the stage with notable electro artists MSTRKRFT. Kid Koala, Boys Noise, Thunderheist, and more… Their recent tours during which they performed a selection of Daft Punk tracks in addition to their own sold out in every market from Toronto east, giving this crazy sonic experiment a solid fan base for the release of their debut EP in Februaryof this year….

    http://www.facebook.com/ElliottBROOD

Elliott BROOD have always been time travellers. The Toronto trio writes songs steeped in history that feel very present. They’ve done their share of actual travelling, too, these musical troubadours, acoustic guitars and banjos slung over their sharp suits as they barnstormed across Canada and beyond. For the new album Days Into Years it was century-old stories encountered an ocean away that brought them closest to home.

Days Into Years is Elliott BROOD’s third full-length recording, the follow-up to 2008’s Polaris Prize short-listed Mountain Meadows. Like its predecessors, including the 2004 debut EP Tin Type and 2006’s Juno-nominated Ambassador, it mines real history to connect songs that are deeply personal in a cinematic, narrative way. Unfolding like a series of movie scenes, it looks to the future by starting with the past. Opening track “Lindsay†invites you into process of revisiting one’s life while cleaning out an old family home. “If I Get Old†daydreams of making it through difficult times, be they in the trenches or a sickbed, and finding a nice place in the country to live out one’s final moments. Days Into Years presents these reflections as a celebration of life, particularly on the perfect summer single “Northern Air,†a love letter both to the rural Ontario landscape and the memory of a departed friend whose spirit now resides there.

Recorded with co-producer John Critchley at Green Door Studios in Toronto and Avening Town Hall (a former army barracks) in rural Ontario, the album showcases a more amped up Elliott BROOD that will put the knell to the “death country†tag that described their early work. Now, the roof-raising rhythm stomp and mandolin collides with luscious harmonies, piano and, for the first time, electric guitar in a mix Casey admits is “loud, heavy and rock ‘n’ roll.â€

Since forming in 2002, Elliot BROOD has become a Canadian music institution. (The 2004 campus radio hit “Oh, Alberta!†remains a national treasure.) But after touring with acts like Wilco, Blue Rodeo, Corb Lund and the Sadies, playing festivals across North America, Europe and Australia and scoring the 2010 film Grown-Up Movie Star (for which they earned a Gemini nomination for Best Original Song), the band now also has a global presence. With Days Into Years they will bring their music, and of one of the greatest Canadian stories, to the world.

Elliott BROOD are Casey Laforet (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass pedals, bass guitar, mandolin, banjo, lap steel, vocals) Mark Sasso (banjo, guitar, harmonica, vocals) and Stephen Pitkin (percussion, drums, piano, vocals).

    PS I LOVE YOU:

After releasing their debut last fall the band have toured North America and Europe extensively. The have wowed audiences at SXSW, The Great Escape, M for Montreal, NXNE and Canadian Music Fest. SUUNS:

Over the past year Suuns have built a reputation for supremely intense live shows “full of thrash, immediacy, and spastic explosiveness†(Brooklyn Vegan), “with an unhinged intensity uncharacteristic of any band in their genre†(Death + Taxes) or more simply and direct “Drone Scholars†(New York Times) and the “#1 Best New Band of 2011″ (NME).

    http://www.myspace.com/suuns_

    http://www.secretlycanadian.com/suuns/

    VALLEYS:

Over the past few years VALLEYS has had the pleasure to play with Fleet Foxes, Yeasayer, Castanets, MGMT, Woods, Future Islands, Why?, Vetiver, Real Estate, Suckers, Lower Dens and Dear Tick.

Words: .. .. "Valleys are an amazing revelation—a band that makes me imagine what it might have been like to see The Swans back in their heyday, if you replaced Michael Gira with a ethereal young female with a deceptive, awesome power." - SOUND PROOF MAGAZINE (live review - Halifax Pop X)

“… The live experience was truly exciting, though, because each song seemed to be unpredictable from moment to moment. In one five-minute song, the group could sound like Glenn Branca’s early-80s guitar experiments and the minimalist American composers of the 70s. There was never a single moment where one could suspect a mapped out structure – everything seemed sonically and emotionally real…more a suggestion of melody rather than the blatant expression of it. This worked staggeringly well for the band.†– SINGING LAMB (NXNE live review)

“Think hushed vocals, layer upon layer of acoustic guitar, with some droney fuzz in the background. Really nice stuff.†– BROOKLYN VEGAN

    Snoop Dogg Freestylin over Dam-Funk:

Free download of the latest ep: http://scionav.com/collection/795/Scion-A/V-Presents:-Dam-Funk---InnaFocusedDaze

Known as Los Angeles' "Ambassador of Boogie Funk," Dam-Funk represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Leimert Park section of L.A., Dãm (pronounced: 'Dame' as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-'80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk.

As a DJ/selector, Dãm attracts the most discerning Boogie Funk afficionados within driving distance of his storied Monday-night Funkmosphere parties. But it's not just collectors at the bar toasting to the melodic sounds. Anyone who grooves to the likes of Slave, Aurra, early Prince, Prelude Records and the like, will get a dose of those groups' unknown contemporaries – more obscure but equally Funk-worthy.

The next phase of the Ambassador's mission is his debut album Toeachizown: continuing the classic West Coast tradition into today's scene with Dãm's own original "Modern-Funk" compositions. By plugging in his arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines, Dãm channels the galactic harmonies of his inspiration into his own brand of new boogie. Stones Throw Records' like-minded honcho Peanut Butter Wolf brought Dãm on to the team to glide into the future with his unique, synth and bass-driven vibe. It's a promising new chapter for Southern Cali space funk.

Advance tickets: $15 available Sept 23rd, More at the door.

  8. Don't miss this soul brother no 1! He's bringing an 8 pc soul-funk band from NY. Very much on par with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Same scene!

    http://www.myspace.com/leefields

LEE FIELDS is a bona-fide, 100%, unadulterated, pure, gut-bucket soul singer. His "legendary" status owes to his undeniably solid series of rare 7" singles (and one LP) recorded and released on his own independent labels in the 70s. MADLIB recently jacked his “Flim Flam†drums for the TV ON THE RADIO remix he produced. Now, the New York label/production team Truth & Soul currently in the studio with Aloe Blacc are ready to bring him to light with a brand new album of beat-heavy, deep soul ballads that will show soul-revivalists the world over what real soul is.

Recorded over four years, Lee Fields & The Expressions have successfully created a unique and personal sound that can hold court with the bands they set out to emulate. However, what they’ve created in the process goes beyond just a carbon copy of a sweet soul music from the 60's and early 70's. The formula has remained the same but the style has been adapted for the ears of youngsters whose experiences with soul began with Amy, not Al, Otis and Marvin. Thirty years of retrospection has colored this cross-generational melding of the minds. It sounds odd on paper, but the results are classic: hip hop-reared record collectors come full circle to produce an album of beautiful soul music with one of the progenitors who made it all possible.

Colonel Bruce Hampton: vocals & guitar

    with

    Mike Bowell: guitar

    Chris Cawthray: drums & percussion

    Paul Neufeld: organ & keyboards

Col. Bruce Hampton has been making music since he formed his first band in 1963 and has been in constant motion ever since leaving a trail of memorable live performances with his many bands, including The Late Bronze Age and Col. Bruce Hampton and The Aquarium Rescue Unit.

Along the way he appeared in the movie "Sling Blade" as the poet and band manager Morris and starred in (Phish’s) Mike Gordon's cult classic "Outside Out" as a mystical guitar “outstructorâ€.

In the late 80s, Bruce formed The Aquarium Rescue Unit, arguably the most-influential jamband of all time. The ARU tore up stages all over North America for the better part of the decade, and when Bruce disbanded the Unit in favour of his Fiji Mariners ensemble, the various members spiraled out into the jamband world, landing in the Allman Brothers Band, the Dead and Widespread Panic, to name a few.

Hampton returns to Canada to continue his latest collaboration, an outerspaceways organ trio led by drummer/percussionist Chris Cawthray and featuring Mike Bowell on guitar and Paul Neufeld on organ and keyboards.
