  3. I understand the exclusivity principle, but I could swear C.R. Avery and the Sojourners played both festivals last year (I believe on the same weekend). I'll have to find out from our artistic director if she got a dispensation from the pope or no one noticed or no one cared.

  4. Looking for some advice. I’m chair of this year’s Stewart Park Festival, a small festival here in Perth. We don’t generally have a headliner because our budget won’t allow it (the festival is free). This year, however, being our 20th we were thinking of trying to get a bigger name - Blue Rodeo etc. Because it’s the same weekend as Bluesfest, my thinking was to try and get someone who was playing Ottawa and have them slip into Perth the night before or the night after. Maybe save a buck. Not sure who talk to at Bluesfest about when they start to book. Monahan doesn’t list an email. Could just phone the number listed I suppose, but was wondering if anyone had a contact they'd recommend?

  5. Gonna see The Hip tomorrow in London.

Just back from this one. Really enjoyed it. These days the Hip strike me as a band who have nothing to prove to anyone and know it...loose and feelin' good about where they're at and what they're doing. Setlist stuck close to the classics. Opened with NOIS which was a bit of surprise to me. Nice acoustic set in the middle. Jim Bryson provided some tasteful backup on keys.

I'm a huge Kathleen Edwards fan, but this wasn't the bill for her. Sandwiched between the Spades/Arkells and the Hip, her set came just as some clowns were getting well-lubricated and over-anxious. She held her ground though and when they started to chant Hip! Hip! she'd join them and when they stopped, she'd go: "Whatthefuck is with that?"

To be honest, I don't think three opening acts are necessary. Just more time for some folks to get stupid. I say let the young guns do their thing, then bring on Downie and the boys (though I heard it was a different dynamic in Wiarton w/Sam Roberts in the third slot).

  6. S&R is gone gone gonzo

Funny I was reading on the weekend that the owner of Vandervoort Hardware is taking the hardware out of the name and going to make it into a general store. He's hoping to capture some of the S&R trade and to hire some of their former employees. For many years in the 70s and 80s Vandervoorts was an employee-owned operation (one of whom was my dad). I spent many a summer working in the store. For me it will always be a hardware store.

BTW, Boogie if you're looking for a bit of home while in K-town, The Spades are scheduled to be at the Merchant (lower Princess) on Sat. Jul.11

  7. Nice. Thanks Kev.

For me, Buddy Holly is to rock what Hank Williams is to country and Robert Johnson is to the blues - a figure whose greatness literally defines a genre. It's difficult sometimes to fully appreciate the magnitude of their impact outside the historical context within which they worked.

Buddy Holly was 22 when he died.
