Please take no offense to my comment, I will speak freely.
I give up on trying to promote my livelyhood to folks who couldn't care less. I've been here for a couple of years,..made endless posts for great music coming to a place near you. But with 0% support. Not even a thumbs up(except for a few friends who I know here) Now, I don't expect everyone to show interest, this just doesn't happen. But one would assume that a room full of people who claim to enjoy the likes of jazz, reggae, funk and all that other tasty stuff, would show at least a slight bit of interest. It's all good!
This thread alone proves without doubt that this message board is more concerned with drama than music. This has been my most successful thread yet. too funny
so it's simple,...I give up

Given the cloudy situation surrounding this historic club, you'll kick yourself if you don't go to CBGB.

Over the past few years I have had the oppertunity to play with some of the finest, most progressive area musicians around. I always post these shows here, but with no degree of success is there an interest. This is quite unfortunate. It's not even that I'm dying for the support, these shows are most always jammed to capasity. I just figured, that those show going, quality music lovers who talk the talk around here would really enjoy one of these outings. It's not at my loss,,,, I get to play with these guys and girls, but you guys and girls unfortunately get to miss out every single time.
So still with the endless lack of support I receive around here, I would love to see you guys out to any one of these events.
thanks

We've dug up an awsome local organ player and a surprise Toronto freestyle hip-hopper for this one. There will be other guests as well. The night will consist of various musical stylings. Jazz, Reggae, Funk, Experimental Improv & Hip Hop.
It will be a little different from the shows that I've put on in the past. This is Dexters project.
We will play only from the heart.
Free to get in, if you can fit.
Saturday July 30th
Two Doors Down
Browntown
Music begins @ 10:00pm
This is going to be worth video tape.
Hope to see you

I think it's because if people go that haven't been before or aren't into 'the scene' that too many people will have to get turned away, or if too many people find out that the local kids will show up and cause too much hassle for rick.
I find this comment hard to swallow. It seems to imply, that we should put up walls around a "scene" so others aren't able to discover something new. In turn, have the "scene" not expand. Very pretentious. This would be a scene with quite undesirable constituents. Who would join such a thing?

None of those things I metioned "matter", but the question asked was, why is she famous? Those are some of the contributing factors as to "why she is famous" she has had oppertunities that we haven't, achieved by her own hard work. Her fathers skills and roots on the piano, lends to her own knack, that's why he is relevant to her success and in the debate. I personally don't like her either.
Before jazz was broken down into so many labels; free, modal, acid etc. there was just jazz. Bop was simply standards played at a faster pace. Quarter notes to eighth note via Charlie Parker, Coltrane then turned eighths into sixteenths etc. Most bop songs have lyrics because they are simply standards played fast. Hard bop or fast jazz, still with lyrics. Modal is also a birth of standards, rather than playing the key, only play one part or mode of the key then modulate your findings. Those modes all derive from lyrical traditions in modulation. Free jazz, via Ornetet Coleman, just scrambles it all up into one big stew of insanity, and alot of free jazz players now adays use vocalist as instruments, not singing phrases or melodies but using the endless sounds a voice can offer as an unusual tool of sound. Or singing a wonderful melody atop complete insanity, it's quite the mix either way.
I too prefer jazz without vocals. But, when I play a ballad and there is a beautiful smokey voiced sweetheart singing her heart out, I and most of the audience will melt. It changes the setting, placing the band in the back seat, grabbing the audience and lifting them up, then the band kicks back in, there is a genuine beauty to it sometimes.

I dont know, something to do with:
Learning piano at age 4.
Playing in jazz clubs at the age of 15
Father who was a stride piano player
Granted Berkeley Scholarship as a teenager
Picked up by Just in Time Records & Verve Records
Spending 52 weeks @ #1 on Billboard Jazz Charts
Winning Grammys
And winning over young audiences @ Lilith Fair
I'm sure there's much more to "why she's famous" but you'll have to research it yourself.
Ps: Regarding volcals over jazz, most jazz songs have vocals written for them, but due to a lack pa systems (back in the day) and available vocalists, the players just played the heads of the turnes to excentuate the melody lines, giving us the jazz we think we know today.

Once again, overwhelming interest in this post has led me to a state of confusion. Being that so many members of cavern are intrigued, I must advise that not all of you show up due to the capasity of the club, you just wont fit. There will be room for the adamant!
perhaps I will see you there
good time guaranteed!

Due to the overwhelming support this thread has achieved, I just couldn't stop myself from commenting.
But really, what do you get when you cross: 1 doctor, 1 scientist, 1 teacher, 1 piano tuner and 1 strange lad?
You get this show!
I shall visualize you all there and with the right amount of creative manifestation,... so it will be!

StoneMtn you sound just as offended as I do so,..we'll both relax - peace
Esau - I have spoke my mind on such topics before, they too went with out interest
I have reached out many times with no success. This is why I find humour in this thread getting so much attention.
If person "a" posts 10 threads about music and nobody responds,..then proceeds to post a dramatic statment and everyone responds,...does that not equate to more interest in drama than music?
I know everyone here likes music. But lets face it,..message boards are message boards, their nature is of dramatic character. It's not bad, it's normal.
I like yourselves, love them.
