  1. Hey sorry I know StoneMtn.'s prob'ly the only one with a good sense of the legal issues here but basically this just really upset me.

I often like daily go to Mitzi's on College which is at the foot of my street and order coffee or food and use their wifi - like countless environments around the city. There's a starbucks nearby or much much better The Common where I am now. In any case I've been totally broke and because of going through some really hard ass shit with the chef I worked for I guess I was pissing off the staff. I also burn them CD's all the time and hook them up with good tips and treats (I also worked in the exact same space when it was a Thai restaurant for a year, and probably drop $50-$100 there since they opened).

In any case in an absent minded moment and this was not unrelated to be in a bit of a mental health crisis I was on top of but struggling to manage- one day I ended up having to pay with a combo of quarters, nickels and alot of pennies (for like a $1.50 coffee). I also said to the girl working at the time 'you're catching me on a really bad day, I work for a really demanding chef and it's just embarassing'.

In any case this regular server a kid who went to my high school this morning just ignored me for twenty minutes then rudely told me 'I'm not going to serve you, you paid with pennies last week, that's not cool' I then left politely and asked when I could have a discussion with management about this and he rudely said something like management would back me up on this.

In any case I know alot about tenancy law with regard to mental health shit, and human rights shit and whatnot. I guess I wonder what would an act like this be a contravention of. The product was after all paid for in whatever currency.

  2. They might, they might not- but they will have kicked my ass and saved my soul on more than a few thousand occasions.....

"projectionists and publicists, athletes and comedians

photographers and columnists, subscribers and enthusiasts

participants and spectators, the ragers and the clever kids

    we're all actors and actresses

i want to thank you all for having me

a special thanks to the academy

for birthing me and blessing me

    with this fantastic opportunity

to let the light shine down on me

now let us grieve for dead celebrities

we know them all from all the magazines"

    Spectres from B-Sides

  3. This was just fucking insane. I knew they'd be playing essentially the same setlist with a few variations but it's like I'd blocked it out of my mind (and admittedly I'd only caught the second set last time). Just some total ragged Rock & Roll, tasty touches from Michael Johnson (Skydiggers) that kept things on the rails, five horns (Rambunctious) played on the last 3 or 4. Sexsmith sang back up on one and keys and back up on another. Just a ridiculously beautiful night of music for 5 bucks!

  4. I don't like to post setlists when I think there's a chance it's a worked out set but with this crew you can bet they'll mix it up, count on slick keys (they've had pros like Michael Johnson and Kevin Hearn from Skydiggers sit in on keys, well Ron Sexmith sat in on keys and a tune last time too).

  7. I got given a substantial gift in the form of an emusic premium subscription from a friend and have alot of credits if you like to download new music.

If you could take a chance on or just knew you needed to buy certain new albums what would they be?

  8. I've basically been on a crazy run of sous-chefing at the restaurant, still doing the mental health drop-in kitchen and likely writing and researching another 40 hrs. a week. Easily just 5 hrs. sleep a night and at the gym first thing at 6:00 every morning. Slept 'til 8 and got a bunch of wicked emails from cool people, my buddy hooked me up with his premium emusic subscription to just download a whack of brand new licensed emusic - just listening to a crispy Wild Mountain Nation that pulled in about 13 seconds.

I'm smoking mad med pot and reading new Marvel comics all day fuck it!

  9. Yeah I've been listening to this Excision set for the last hour it's quite good - takes me back to some Mickey Finn or Darren J jungle party.

Thanks for the link (oh and lowroller keeps me informed about why... what is that band A Perfect Circle... why those guys are supposed to be good.. .. no wait it's the Catherine Wheel you love those guys don't you).

  10. Gaslamp Killer is not really a Dupstep DJ. He could be the worlds greatest psych-rock dj who mixes in dubstep and hip hop and whatnot

Couldn't agree more. Really with everything that's been said. You know what I need seriously is some just some straight up point and click mp3s you guys can tip me to (particularly this Wu dubstep Eric!!!) that I can pull down and get on my ipod before I have to chef it up at the restaurant tonight. The owner and I have a shared love of Prince, he was a DJ and he has a shared love for many of the things we all love to ingest so somehow I can play this stuff at the resto.

Thanks seriously. The epic name drop by the by wasn't meant to be pretentious as fuck, I'm sure it was, I basically love my neighborhood and as a music journo I love being able to interact with my heroes (like Matt Murphy aka Guy Terrifico aka Lil Orton Hoggett is seriously one of my heroes) on a daily basis within blocks of my house is cool. The more important part you don't seem to get is that Hendricks take on Collett informs my writing on Jason, kc's take on performers as a booker and audiophile influences me, Eric's take on production informs my take on production, BradM or Pete's tape's allow me to revisit shows and pick out musical or lyrical details and dynamics. Essentially for all my 'gotta be cruel to be kind' shit I do get a great deal of insight out of this community.

  11. I do like DZ's Old Timers and I implicitly trust your guys take on in particular your taste in this case in music (I trust the Sloth implicitly who once told me that Jason Collett's Hangover Days was one of the best -Canadian?- pop songs written in the past decade which I agree with and have forwarded the compliment to Jason as recently as yesterday actually- ran into him at the Y, also ran into Chris Murphy, Matt Murphy, Gentleman Reg, and Champagne James from Run With The Kittens within a one block radius of my house and the gym).

I think I agree with the technical points you're making I don't think that Killer's a better DJ because he waves his arms around and shit. I mean how many dubstep DJ's get invited into QBert's lab? It's his much more expansive understanding of so-called 'world music', Turkish pop and psychedelia, left-field and mainstream hip hop - plus his dextrous mixes that make him such a threat.

  12. You're listening to his releases or mixtapes and not watching his live sets from events. He's a visual performer and needs to be seen, you also see his deep appreciation for the music and textures he's conjuring and by seeing him execute mixes you get a sense of just how good he is technically beyond repertoire. And I'm sure Gaslamp and Gonji Sufi have worked together they're both Flying Lotus, or have been, non?
