the jvc displays are good in light or dark and the interface is clean and simple. but i am biased against the animated colour displays. they are equivalent to throwing money away in my opinion. Again, unless you aren't going to actually drive... in which case you would be able to safely look at the screen for more than 500 milliseconds at a time...

  2. Just get a shitty amp, chuck it under the seat and run the line in to the ipod... no head unit to get stolen. Regular radio sucks, and what's the point of CDs anyway? Rip 'em the day you buy them, and they never have to leave the shelf.

Breakin' the bank on car audio is asking for trouble. You can get a head unit that plays mp3s burned to DVD off ebay for $100, and if it gets stolen who cares. Sound quality be damned... unless you sit in the car with the engine off and use it as a listening room, the road noise is going to cancel out every dollar spent on high end units (and then some).

I guess I just don't see the point of having an ipod display in the dash when the ipod already has a display. Wouldn't it be better to spend the money on a really sturdy mount for the ipod? Then the most expensive piece of your car stereo goes in your pocket with you whenever you leave the car...

  3. One thing that's really going to annoy you if you listen to live music is the gaps that an ipod puts between the tracks. Luckily, if your ipod model supports it (and if you have enough nerd blood in you) you can install 3rd party firmware that blows apple's crap out of the water (it will let your ipod play any format including flac, with gapless output and other "audiophile" features). it's definitely worth looking at:

  4. ps: also whats up with there always being a cover charge in this town for even the shittiest bar-band? isnt the price of beer enough admission charge for background cover tunes? are there any places here where you can jsut walk in and check out even a solo guitarist, drink a beer and take off without getting nabbed for $5? maybe i just don't know where to go. part of the problem is the monday magazine show listings are a bowl of crud
