  1. instead of 'giving' their money away to the poor bastards they know will be left behind, the popular choice seems to be to spend every last f'ing penny on themselves

That's it, in a nutshell. I feel so sorry for the kids in this case (and to be sure in way too many others) whose parents and subjected them to this future, but this is exactly the kind of self-indulgence that rots Christianity from within.

I liked this piece that went up a few days ago on HuffPost - thought it nailed it pretty well. Desiring the End of the World

  2. I can only go by what the students in my Critical Thinking class have to say, when they're given an assignment where they need to go point-by-point through a comparison of the Ottawa Citizen and the Ottawa Sun, and a fair 98% of them end up opting for the Citizen, just because of the depth of the stories and the sense that they're not being pandered to by some news organisation that's telling them how their supposed to be thinking. I'm not even much of a fan of the Citizen, but I do think that this tells volumes about what the Sun is about, and how it reaches their audiences.

  3. Dead Man's Hat will make their triumphant "Oh there you are, sheesh, where have you been for the last year" return, playing Irene's this Friday night for the inaugural Best of Open Mic show. It'll be a relatively short set, but I'd encourage people to come out and catch all three acts - there's some awfully fine musicianship that I know I'll be appreciating. Fun starts 7:30-8 (this apparently in spite of what the Irene's website would tell us). We'll be the second lot up. Hope that folks can make it out.

  4. project democracy

very cool site that applies polling to local ridings. probably not really precise but cool.

It seems the stats are based on the '08 election, but it's at least a quick and handy reminder of how things went last time. The word of advice for my own riding is that it's pretty much hopeless to get the Con incumbent out (no surprises there, given the guy and the riding), so vote by conscience. More up-to-date polls would be handy, though (however unreliable).

  5. I wish I never saw Breaking Bad and that I could watch it for the first time.

I've been re-watching it all for the last week and a bit; I'm now up to episode 10 of season 3. I have to confess, it's way easier to focus on the subtleties of the show now that the edge of all the tension is dulled a bit. And what amazing subtleties there are. Bryan Cranston's acting is absolutely brilliant.

  6. I'm still wrestling hard with the strategic voting thing. I'm sure that was at the forefront of the 3/4 of the participants tonight, though. Iggy came off better than I thought he would, at least; it feels like that was a result of him not letting go of any the scandals that have come up over the last couple of years, repeated often enough to keep them in awareness over the course of the debate.
