  1. Home fries with chili-garlic sauce and green salad.

Cut potatoes into wedges and toss in olive oil, salt and pepper. Roast at 450 until done.

    For sauce combine:

    2 tbsp plain yogurt

    2 tbsp mayonnaise

    2 tsp apple cider vinegar

    1 tsp dijon

    1 tsp chili-garlic paste

    1 clove garlic minced

My usual salad is just greens, red onion, red pepper, and goat cheese with a simple vinaigrette.

  2. I bought a couple of CDs on December 31st that are definitely albums of the year for me:

Propagandhi -- Supporting Caste This album is quite a bit more metal than punk and heavier than anything they've done in the past. Fantastic thrash.

Howe Gelb -- Wingin' It This is a live CD/DVD package from Gelb's Canadian tour with the Voices of Praise choir. Here's a clip from the DVD:

  3. In no particular order:

Japandroids - Post-Nothing I'm listening to this for the first time right now and I understand why it's been mentioned so many times. Awesome.

The Got to Get Got - Sahalee I live in Dartmouth now so these guys are my favourite local band at the moment. Super catchy noise rock.

Land of Talk - Fun and Laughter I'm surprised I've never seen this band mentioned on this board. This EP has both Brad and Andrew Barr playing on it.

Tom Waits - Glitter and Doom Live Dude is 60 years old and at the top of his game. No Marc Ribot on this tour, but a great band nonetheless.

Caledonia - We Are America This a Nova Scotian band that hasn't had much exposure. They have sort of a rootsy classic rock sound. Solid album worth checking out: Caledonia myspace

The Dead Weather - Horehound The first Jack White album I could really get into.

Jenn Grant - Echoes Super pretty album.

Tim Fite - Change of Heart Tim Fite is the new Beck. You can download all his stuff for free at www.timfite.com.

St. Vincent - Actor I still find myself reaching for Marry Me more often, but Actor is very good.

Them Crooked Vultures Supergroups always disappoint to some degree, but this album is pretty fucking good.

Rock Plaza Central - At the Moment of Our Most Needing Some people seem to really dislike this band, but their albums get a lot of play at my house. This is arguably their best album yet.

Nirvana - Live at Reading Pretty great live album.

Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle I add this reluctantly because if I'm in the wrong mood I can really be critical of this album, but I've certainly played it a ton.

  4. I moved home to Nova Scotia this year after living in Montreal for awhile. I was expecting to have my access to good beer drasticly reduced, but have been pleasantly surprised. There are a couple of independent beer and wine stores that carry Dieu du Ciel, Unibroue, Rogue, etc. and the quality of our local brewers has really improved since I last lived in Halifax.

Propeller Bitter is my beer of choice these days by a longshot.

Their Porter is also very good, and they're brewing a limited run Pumpkin Ale for Halloween that's kinda neat.

  5. Anybody here eat at M:brgr in Montreal?

    http://eatwellmontreal.com/mbrgr/

I've been there. They do make a great burger, but it's not really worth the price. I had a $12 ginger mojito with it that was very good, but still not worth the bucks. My wife had a Nicoise salad that she said was tremendously unremarkable. The service and ambiance sucked.

You're much better off heading to La Paryse where they have great service, atmosphere and food -- all at a reasonable price. They make great veggie burgers there too.

  6. I recently tried cooking zucchini blossoms for the first time. I removed the stamens, then stuffed them with tomato, basil and bocconcini. I made a batter using 3/4 cup of flour mixed with 3/4 cup of soda water. Twist the blossoms closed, then batter and fry in oil. Awesome. We had them with a quinoa salad.

  7. Here's a beet salad I make often. It can be served warm or cold.

Toss 3 cups of diced beets in 2-3 tbsp of olive oil and roast at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

    Mix together:

    1 minced shallot

juice and zest of half a lemon

    1 tbsp olive oil

    1 tbsp chopped dill

    1/2 tsp salt

Toss the roasted beets in the dressing and let marinate an hour before serving.

I usually serve it with trout or salmon and a simple risotto.

  8. I recommend that no one listen to hip hop.

I didn't get into hip hop until I heard stuff like Blackalicious, The Roots, Black Star, and Dilated Peoples. Everybody on Quannum Records is worth listening to. Lately I've been discovering all the classic old stuff that I missed out on back when I didn't get hip hop. Can't get enough KRS-One these days.

  9. I switched my under-the-sink plastic compost bin to a stainless steel countertop one that I wash regularly and fruit flies aren't much of a problem anymore. You can pour a white vinegar or bleach down the kitchen sink drain too; that's where they breed.
