  1. ahhh yeah! Nick and Wooley were mentioned that "yeah she's great" and that she was spending alot of time in Montreal. Combined with guesting on Bye Bye Bye at Regina Folk Fest...I should have put it together...

Basia Bulat Signs to Secret City Records, Announces Sophomore Album

    9/16/2009 By Brock Thiessen

Following her much-loved 2007 album Oh, My Darling, Toronto-bred indie darling Basia Bulat is all ready for album two. The record is being dubbed Heart of My Own and coming courtesy of her new Canadian label home of Secret City Records on January 26. (If you’re over across the pond, you’ll be able to scoop up the LP via the reputable Rough Trade imprint.)

Like Oh, My Darling, Bulat’s sophomore effort was laid down with producer Howard Bilerman at Montreal’s famed Hotel2Tango. However, the press release says to expect a more eclectic record from the singer-songwriter this time out.

“I think it is at times extremely sparse and, well, spacious, with big choirs singing,†Bulat says in a statement, “and then it gets really dense with really spirited and rolling drums.â€

Bulat has a few dates lined up in the coming weeks, but get ready for a whole lot more in the months to come.

    Heart of My Own:

    1. “Go Onâ€

    2. “Runâ€

    3. “Sugar and Spiceâ€

    4. “Gold Rushâ€

    5. “Heart of My Ownâ€

    6. “Sparrowâ€

    7. “If Only Youâ€

    8. “I’m Forgetting Everyoneâ€

    9. “The Shoreâ€

    10. “Once More, For the Dollhouseâ€

    11. “Walk You Downâ€

    12. “If It Rainsâ€

    Tour dates:

9/19 Kingston, ON - The Grad Club

9/23 Vancouver, BC - St. James Hall

9/24 Victoria, BC - Metro Studio

10/3 Wakefield, ON - Black Sheep Inn

  2. ^ I gotta get me some more of that next time you are in town Luke. Had a great night as well. Tell Kate I enjoye her company (the letsmockLuke'phrenia included).

Yeah Ming, I was surprised they didn't play Lola Who, A L'oree des bois, and New Kind of Love.

I saw them last night at University of Ottawa, free outdoor show but the environment was uhhh 101 week silly stuff, so...yeah. The band was great though. I asked Nick about that setlist and he told me they had planned New Kind of Love and maybe some others but when everyone got up they launched Guru/Sinnerman but they weren't intially planning on playing it.

  3. I got some family function that may be keeping me from this, but I will do my best to try and come, even late as I may be. The album is flawless and the live shows packs an absurd amount of energy.

Highly recommend checking out this band. Not to mention the astounding Leif Vollebekk, everyone who hears him live falls in love with his music.

  4. Really enjoyed this show. Some of the reviews of the shows leading up to this were like "amazing tight band" "best show of 2009" etc. I didn't think it was up there, but its was still solid.

My eyes were fixed on Paul Banwatt the whole time, man he is fast but always keeping it on lock. Nils was great too, but Paul stole the show.

I shot video and perhaps post a few clips when my comp is fixed and I get it transferred...later this week/next week.

  5. d'urbervilles were super good, i'd never seen them before and while they sound exactly like constantines, i don't think that's a bad thing. rural alberta advantage had waaaaay too much handclapping, hehe. they were great though, and i take back what i said last week about the spastic drumming. i don't like it on the record but man is it hard to take your eyes of the dude while he plays live...

The durbs are amazing. Seen them 3 times, love John O's energy. And their new tunes sound great "Get In Or Get Out" "Junkpile" "Gunhammer" and that other one that has a wicked guitar melody then end with.

I too couldn't keep my eyes off Paul Banwatt of RAA when I saw them here on Thursday. Phenomenal drummer.

  6. Sorry to hear you missed it Brad. I enjoyed their set, loud and rough and the drummer (so it is a new guy eh, because I've seen them with two other drummers in the past...maybe three) was really grabbing my attention.
