Nov 20 - North York Library, Toronto Toronto's Quirky Indie Soul artist Maylee Todd choosing her own adventures! Now supporting Woodhands, The Golden Dogs and Aloe Blacc on upcoming Canadian Tour dates After a busy and successful summer, Maylee Todd and her band are off on new and exciting adventures! They'll be supporting indie-tronica duo Woodhands on an upcoming tour that starts in Vancouver and ends in Peterborough, she’ll also be supporting one of the hottest soul artists around-- the sensational Aloe Blacc whose hit “I Need A Dollar†has become anthem of the recession -- at the closing party for the Nu Jazz Festival on Monday, November 15th in Toronto at Wrongbar. Maylee Todd, one of Canada’s most exciting new music acts, is spreading an infectious energy around like wildfire. With the vocal chords of an angel, charismatic stage presence and a string of soulful pop tunes, this bright, young spark is turning heads by reinventing tropical grooves. Maylee first gained national exposure as a guest vocalist on Woodhands singles “Dissembler†and “Dancer,†and through collaborations with the likes of Henri Faberge and the Adorables, Peter Project and Circle Research. Now Toronto-based Maylee introduces us to her band Pegwee Power and their debut album Choose Your Own Adventure (released on Do Right Music in June. 2010). The group, which started as a solo act, with just Maylee on her harp, guitar and tenori accompanied by a looping station, now consists of Andrew Scott (synth) Eric Woolston (vibraphone & drums) and Chris Kettlewell (upright bass & accordion). Maylee injects a unique element of humour into much of her art, which also explains her eccentric choice of attire on the album’s cover and on stage. Her outrageous new video "Aerobics in Space" (view video here) has created an incredible buzz on social networks since the launch only three weeks ago. “I think the idea of doing any sort of physical activity in space is pretty funny,†she explains. Since going viral, the video has been added to MuchMusic and now in rotation on The Wedge. Following a recent performance at Pop Montreal to a capacity crowd and an incredible summer festival season that included The Evolve Festival and Harbourfront's World Routes Festival; Maylee Todd now embarks on her first solo tour to the west coast promoting her quirky, light hearted stage show and debut release to unsuspecting audiences. Recent reviews "Sweet like birdsong, limpid like a nylon-stringed guitar in the park, silky like dappled sun through the urban forest." - EYE Weekly, Toronto "Her bewitching melodies and powerhouse vocals make it all seem very logical and down to earth." - Elle Canada "You can't help appreciating its ridiculous fun..." - NOW Magazine, Toronto "Todd's delicate vocals and detailed harp work sooth the soul on the adventurous 'Pegwee Power!!!' while the star and her talented backing players channel their inner funk, complete with dancing horns, a mid-cut drum breakdown and the ringleader's inspired screams on fitting closer "Aerobics In Space - Exclaim Magazine
  8. Live Nation Presents... MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12TH, 2010 KOOL HAUS – TORONTO Doors: 8:00PM Show: 9:00PM Special guest: Bobby Long Buy Tickets: http://www.ticketmaster.ca/event/100044FAAE51AA56?artistid=1051815&majorcatid=10001&minorcatid=1 www.michaelfranti.com Michael Franti is the creator and lead singer of Michael Franti & Spearhead. For over two decades, the Bay Area born Franti has been bringing our world exceptionally powerful, deeply felt music. Franti first formed the punk band The Beatnigs while studying at the University of San Francisco, and later the far more hip hop-inflected The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. In the mid-Nineties, Franti created Spearhead, and increasingly in recent years, he’s found his own voice musically and his own organic brand of popular success. Franti’s impressive series of recordings have vividly reflected his status as a musical citizen of the world. Michael Franti & Spearhead are set to appear at the Kool Haus on November 12th. The date is one of many on Franti & Spearhead’s “The Sound of Sunshine Tour†across North America in support of Franti’s upcoming album, THE SOUND OF SUNSHINE, to be released September 21st through Capitol Records/Boo Boo Wax. The album’s title track and first single, “The Sound of Sunshineâ€, just hit #1 on the AAA chart. "I’m so excited to be hitting the road again this fall and sharing our new music live with our fans. To play music that makes people feel energized and passionate about life in these stressful times, is a privilege that I'm grateful to have. We've been doing a lot of acoustic street performances these days outside the venues we've been playing in and I look forward to seeing longtime fans again and meeting new ones in every city we play in," says Michael. Throughout his career, Franti has earned and maintained a reputation as one of the best live acts in the business. Playing music off of the new album, Franti & Spearhead are sure to deliver an electrically charged, and ultimately unforgettable, musical experience for fans. www.bobby-long.co.uk Bobby Long is a singer/songwriter from Calne, Wiltshire, South West England. He moved to London to pursue his musical career and is currently on a multi-national tour through United States and Europe. He likens his music to “drops of rain on a bull fighter’s back, like punches breaking through a Windy Gail.†Bobby is most well-known for his work on the Twilight Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, which featured his song, “Let Me Sign,†co-written with fellow musician Marcus Foster and performed by star Robert Pattinson. The album has since gone on to win the American Music Award for Best Soundtrack. promoted in conjunction with www.nufunk.ca

JUMP N FUNK -THE ORIGINAL FELA KUTI TRIBUTE PARTY w/ RICH MEDINA For nearly a decade, JUMP N’ FUNK has been a staple on dancefloors from New York to Berlin to Japan, establishing itself as the first and most consistent DJ-based party dedicated to Fela Kuti and his message of peace and equality through music. It has had many homes from its early days at the SHRINE in NYC to THE BARBICAN MUSEUM in LONDON ENGLAND, but without fail, JUMP N’ FUNK has always packed clubs in with dancers and Afrobeat junkies of all stripes, Rich Medina controls the room with epic 4-hour DJ sets and capitvating visuals behind him, only resting to allow live Afrobeat ensembles like Antibalas or Chico Mann take the stage with a flurry of blaring horns and hard-driving percussion that raise the volume and send the dancefloor into a frenzy. DJ RICH MEDINA(Philly): DJ Rich Medina lives, breathes, and revels in sharing the type of music that make a listener remember his soul. It is this awareness of soul that brings listeners back time and again to hear Rich spin: heads nod, bodies sway, emotions expand and coalesce. Rich Medina holds DJ residencies at prominent venues throughout the country. Most recently he is a defining DJ at NY’s Le Poisson Rouge nightclub as well as the prestigious Martinez Gallery. Rich was approached by Jill Scott to produce a track for what would be her multi-platinum debut release, Who Is Jill Scott? ( Sony/Hidden Beach). DJ Rich Medina, renaissance man, articulate performer and a down and dirty DJ who can go head to head with the best, is an artist who will transform the average experience of any club or venue and give his audience a night of music and words to remember. SOULJAZZ ORCHESTRA (Ottawa): Since their creation in Ottawa, Canada, back in 2002, the Souljazz Orchestra have become one of the most potent bands in their field. Drawing on the rough, raw grooves of the '60s and '70s and effortlessly fusing soul, jazz, afro and latin rhythms within their music, the group have moved forward the blueprint of Fela, Fania and the funk in entirely new ways, while keeping the vital analogue grit intact. As a live unit, years of relentless touring have formed the band into an in-demand fixture at venues and festivals worldwide. Having turned heads with two fine records on the Toronto-based Do Right! label, Freedom No Go Die (2006, featuring their breakthrough single "Mista President") and Manifesto (2008), the Souljazz Orchestra have recently released the hotly anticipated Rising Sun album on London-based Strut Records. Drawing on a wider canvas of styles than ever before, touching on spiritual jazz, deep African rhythms, and cinematic soundscapes, the Orchestra take their sound to new heights with stunning musicianship and virtuoso arrangements throughout. Long-time fan Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio One) has already declared this album to be their best yet. Read more: http://www.myspace.com/souljazzorchestra MINOTAURS (Guelph): Pop, folk, roots, and rock are the most common descriptors used for the music Lawr and his Minotaurs create, but none is especially applicable here. For this fourth album since the singer/multi-instrumentalist's split from Royal City, he and his comrades aim for something that leans closer to jazz and Afrobeat than anything else. It's what The Hylozoists might sound like with vocals and with horns instead of strings. If you're looking for a Canadian alternative to the music of Gayngs or The XX, The Thing might be it. DJ NANA (Toronto) ON: As an intensely passionate and dedicated lover of music, DJ NaNa is a forever moving, restless soul. For years he has been a member of the cutting edge of Toronto's music scene, earning himself the reputation as one of the most powerful dj's in the city. As a DJ, producer, and founder of Ear2muchconcepts, DJ NaNa tears through influences which include everything from hip-hop, soul and jazz to electronica, house, reggae and traditional African music. NaNa has always pushed himself to break boundaries and genres and often challenges his audience to go on that journey of discovery with him through music. DJ NaNa's first love has always been deejaying, consistently lugging hundreds of records around the city in an old case, simply to play at any party receptive to being rocked. This resulted in the room being filled with pounding drums and saturated bass lines where NaNa essentially carved out a space for himself and forced his way in with the rest of the world. 12. MATT COSTA WITH EVEREST SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31ST, 2010 THE MOD CLUB THEATRE – TORONTO Doors: 7:00PM Show: 7:30PM Facebook Link: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=153700044654366 When Matt Costa sat down to write what would become Unfamiliar Faces, the follow-up to his 2005 debut full-length Songs We Sing, the singer/songwriter took his most treasured belongings and put them on a shelf — then stared at them and just let the memories flow. “That way I could see everything that I loved,†he explains (the collection included his favorite books, a giant wooden pipe, and a box of old 45-speed records from the late 1950s). “I let my imagination wander. Regular life isn’t as exciting as an imaginary life.†He may thrive on imagination, but Costa’s real life has never been dull. He grew up next door to a pet cemetery, played trumpet and piano, gave his first impromptu performance on a houseboat, and focused more on skateboarding than school in his hometown of Huntington Beach, California. He was drawn to the freedom and improvisation of skating, and also says, “I discovered a lot of music through skating — B-sides that nobody else had heard that made me want to find more music.†On the strength of the folky, beautiful Songs, which displays his gentle artistry and skillful acoustic guitar playing, Costa earned a rep as an L.A. buzz act, crisscrossed the U.S. in a van, and performed at all the major North American music festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Sasquatch, Bonnaroo, and Austin City Limits among others. Invigorated by onstage collaborations with tour openers like Los Angeles rockers The 88 and Elvis Perkins, he returned to California and wrote nearly all of Unfamiliar Faces in Sacramento, then recorded the album in the spring of 2007 in Santa Ana, again with Dumont, even inviting Adam Merrin from The 88 to play keys on a few tracks. It’s Costa’s second release on Brushfire Records, the label co-founded by Jack Johnson, who has been a longtime supporter – the two fellow musicians have toured together several times and collaborated on numerous soundtrack projects. Even for the fully initiated, Matt Costa is an enigma – a 25 year old, former skateboarder whose words and music recall some of the great troubadours of our time. Costa credits his diverse musical palette to the freedom and improvisation he experienced skating. “Any instrument that allows you the freedom to be creative, whether it be a skateboard or a canvas, it’s all a tangible way of discovering yourself,†says Costa.
