  2. Hey live music fans! We've got a very special announcement for ya'll today... get yourselves ready for a high energy 'newgrass' party with the first ever visit to Vancouver from San Francisco, California's HOT BUTTERED RUM In the short time since Hot Buttered Rum debuted its music, dubbed as a “High Altitude Acoustic Experienceâ€, the band has been praised by fans, peers and national media alike, recognizing Hot Buttered Rum for their ‘stunning instrumental and vocal virtuosity’. Hot Buttered Rum is attracting a truly multi-generational audience with its ability to create an undeniably hip and fresh sound that weaves together the grounded traditions of folk and bluegrass with the modern influences of rock-n-roll, reggae and acoustic singer/songwriters. Hot Buttered Rum’s musical evolution has not only defined their sound, with their extensive touring schedule the band has become established as one of the nation’s hottest young touring acts since setting off as a group of friends on a trail in the High Sierras in the early part of the decade to emerge as a band, appropriately named, Hot Buttered Rum. The past couple years have been truly incredible for Hot Buttered Rum. They have performed at premier music festivals such as Telluride Bluegrass, Newport Folk and South By Southwest, and received an invitation to perform at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 5. The band’s talent has led them to the stage with artists Phil Lesh, Ben Harper, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Chris Thile, Bela Fleck, Peter Rowan, Billy Nershi and Mike Marshall to name a few. Saturday June 23 The Polynesian Room 1489 East Hastings $12 advance tickets on sale Friday May 4 at Zulu Records (1972 W. 4th Ave.) & Highlife World Music (1317 Commercial Drive). www.hotbutteredrum.net www.myspace.com/hotbutteredrum www.bonfirepresents.com
  3. I'm not sorry, Beats. See you Friday.
  4. Hey everyone. I'll just get right to the goods and hope to see many of you out continuing your support of GREAT LIVE MUSIC IN VANCOUVER! Here we go... THE BOTTLE & THE TRUTH Featuring Ridley Bent, Dustin Bentall & Cameron Latimer Between snowcapped mountain ranges and east of the Pacific Ocean, the boomtown known as Vancouver, British Columbia is home to three humble young men and a truck load of great music. One is a word-slingin, hip-hop rhymin’, bonafide campfire storyteller. One has the blue blood of a cowboy coursing through his veins and the musical talent of a legend to boot. The third of the posse is a tender-hearted songwriter with a mean sense of melody and a wicked sense of song. Together Ridley Bent, Dustin Bentall, and Cameron Latimer form The Bottle and The Truth, a stampede of songwriters, storytellers and grade A musicians. with special guests HEADWATER Think folk music could use more edge? Think country music could use less electric guitars and more banjos? Think a solid breakfast is an important start to your day? So does Headwater. Their distinctive blend of folk and country roots music, tractor jazz, sounds something like the love children of the Be Good Tanyas and the Old Crow Medicine Show would, after they'd grown up good and strong. Headwater came together in the fall of 2005, initially hoping to be the subject of a reality TV show... but the pilot deal fell through and they've had to resort to selling records and playing gigs to pay the bills. Friday March 23 The Fairview Pub 898 West Broadway Doors at 9:00 pm Headwater: 10:00 pm - 11:30 pm TB&TT: 12:00 am - 2:00 am -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OMNIBOL One of Vancouver's finest Funk-Rock acts of the early 90's, Omnibol were selling out venues such as the Fabulous Commodore Ballroom & the Town Pump before fate took an unexpected turn in 1995 and the bandmates went their seperate ways. 12 years later and the band have reunited to once again rekindle the special chemistry they shared onstage, to write new material and to take Omnibol to the next level of musical expression. with special guests DAN MARTIN & FRIENDS Wow... the talent sure runs deep in this musical Canadian family. Dan Martin, the younger brother of Slammin Jack's Rich Martin, joins us for this night with his original blend of acoustic rock stylings. Saturday April 7 The Fairview Pub 898 West Broadway Doors at 9:00 pm Dan Martin: 10:15 pm - 11:30 pm Omnibol: 12:00 am - 2:00 am -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BELUGA Beluga is one of Western Canada's most exciting live bands. They have been winning fans with their vibrant rock and roll shows, featuring the powerful vocals, wild stage antics of singer David Curran (aka Captain Canada) and the electric musicianship of guitarist Bill Podmore, drummer Mike Herle, bassist Sean O'Donohue and keyboardist Matt Wolfsohn. Energized-Rock, described as "James Brown meets the Who in outer space", their supercharged sound blends a mix of rock & funk stylings while maintaining a pop sensibility. with special guests TBA Easter Sunday April 8 (HOLIDAY MONDAY!!!) The Fairview Pub 898 West Broadway Doors at 9:00 pm TBA: 10:00 pm - 11:30 pm Beluga: 12:00 am - 2:00 am -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A tribute to the music of the Grateful Dead with CANADIAN BEAUTY Our musical cohorts from Victoria make a trip into town for their 'not-to-be-missed' Grateful Dead Revue. Featuring members of Stephen Franke, Lift & A Particular Wave. with special guests FOR THE FAITHFUL What's a Grateful Dead tribute night without an acoustic opening set? For The Faithful consists of Matt Robertson on guitar, Jason Atterton on bass and Ian Lamont on Mandolin... plus there may be a few other friends joining in too! Saturday May 26 The Fairview Pub 898 West Broadway Doors at 8:30 pm For The Faithful: 9:00 pm - 10:30 pm Canadian Beauty: 11:00 am - 2:00 am (2 sets) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There'll be more to announce very soon folks, including a potential BIG Tiki Room party in May, a Baked Potato/All Purpose show in early June and a series of Vancouver Int'l Jazz Festival shows we'll be producing featuring touring acts from other regions of Canada at the Media Club... our first MC shows in 2 years!! Stay tuned...
  5. Hey all. Just a friendly little reminder about the Bonfire Music & Events show for local yokels this weekend. So, without further adieu... Bonfire Music & Events presents An evening of Afro-Beat, Latin Rhythms & Psychedelic Soul with JARIMBA Start with West African traditional music, add some Cuban spice, mix in a dash of jazz, reggae and hip-hop and you’ve got the unique sound of Jarimba. With a stellar cast of players from L.A., Montreal, Vancouver, and Guinea, and unique instrumentation, they are quickly gaining notice in their hometown of Vancouver. The brainchild of Robin Layne, a graduate of the L.A. Music Academy and one of North America’s only jazz marimba players, the band also features Kocassalé Dioubate on lead vocals and djembe, Brendan Krieg on drums & percussion, Diego Zaragoza on congas, Evan Bates on bass and James Baldwin on guitar. and special guests BAKED POTATO Blending enthusiastic stage prescence along with psychedelia, jazz-funk fusion and extended jamming in the spirit of the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead, Baked Potato provides a staple of fast and furious arrangements of well crafted, jam-laden, horn fuelled jam-funk explorations. Saturday March 3 The Fairview Pub 898 West Broadway Doors at 9:00 pm Baked Potato: 10:00 pm - 11:30 pm Jarimba: 12:00 am - 2:00 am
  6. Just wondering if any of you East Coast folks have caught any of the Hey Ocean! shows while they've been on tour out there. Reviews?
  7. The Railway Club? LAME! Worst venue. They claim to hold 500 capacity, but there's 3 rooms in the place and the live band room only holds about 50 people comfortably... though about 100+ people usually pack in there and make it totally overcrowded & intolerable! Such a shame. Shoulda been at The Fairview or Media Club.
  8. Hey Everyone. Just a quick little reminder about Bonfire Music & Events' first ever show on the University of British Columbia campus... with one of our favourite new bands! JACKFRUIT with special guests Kit & Tim Thursday February 15 The Pit Pub UBC Student Union Building 6138 SUB Blvd. Doors at 8:00 Show starts at 9:15 $6.00 admission www.jackfruitmusic.com www.myspace.com/kitandtim
  9. Hey everyone. We've got a few great shows lined up for you over the next couple of months, so let's get right to 'em! Bonfire Music & Events presents... Reading Break Liftoff A smoking party to kick off University reading break in style with Vancouver's fastest rising new rockers JACKFRUIT “Mary Mother of God is that for real?†might be what you’d say if you watched a group of nuns playing skeetball with grapes and a hockey puck. But after hearing the simple wizardry of four young slingers enchanting you with the right solution of monster bass lines, smooth, molten piano rolls and a slap of supple drum beats, it’s the only response. With an eclectic musical style and maelstrom of motormouth lyrics, Jackfruit has broken ties from genres and classifications creating their own unique bricolage too mind-blowing to pigeon-hole. http://www.jackfruitmusic.com and special guests KIT & TIM Kit Soden and Tim Townsend fuse styles and ideas to form a refreshing blend of funk, folk, jazz, reggae, and eastern influenced music. Playing principally as a guitar duo, with vocal harmonies, they also perform as KAEJEMA, which is a live improvisation oriented extension of their music, in the form of a instrumental groove band. They have always approached music with open minds, and have played with many different styles of musicians. Their sound has appeal for everyone, regardless of age group or musical taste. Their performances as a duo or with the band are always described by the audience as fun, uplifting, entertaining and creative. www.myspace.com/kitandtim Thursday February 15 The Pit Pub @ UBC Lower Level - Student Union Building 6138 SUB Blvd. Doors at 8:00 pm Kit & Tim: 9:15 pm - 10:00 pm Jackfruit: 10:30 pm - 12:30 pm (2 sets) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An evening of Afro-Beat, Latin Rhythms & Psychedelic Soul with JARIMBA Start with West African traditional music, add some Cuban spice, mix in a dash of jazz, reggae and hip-hop and you’ve got the unique sound of Jarimba. 12. Hey all. One of Vancity's finer exports, HEY OCEAN! are heading East in February for a few shows. Definitely a band ya'll will like. Check out some tunes & tour dates at www.myspace.com/heyocean 'Beatboxer' is a personal fave of mine. Cheers K
  13. There was audio & video Brad. Trevor Dubecki (Garaj Mahal's official audio recorder) was recording with 2 feeds... one from the board & one from the audience. He'll be mixing them down and mastering the recording before it gets released, and we've arranged to get copies. They also had a high-def video camera shooting the NYE show and will be making an HD video out of that too. Once we have all the materials we'll try to hook you East-coasters up, okay? I think a couple of East-Coast promoters need to get together to bring GM up to Canada over there (Pepper Jacks, Rancho, Deckuf run?). Garaj Mahal LOVE Canada, and they're in the North East of the US fairly often, so it would be a hop, skip & a jump to head into Eastern Canada. Jay? Shain? Craig? Get on it boyz!
  14. WOW!! 2 spectacular nights of Garaj Mahal action! The 30th they busted out a bunch of psychedelic-electro grooves... very heady night. Last night... GM BROUGHT THE FUNK! That was probably the best Garaj show I've ever seen... out of 30 shows or so? I imagine the shows will be up on the archives fairly soon. Can't wait!
  15. Newly minted with some awards hardware, San Francisco's kings of the groove GARAJ MAHAL will be visiting Vancouver for a very special 2-night NEW YEARS EVE run at the intimate Fairview Pub (898 West Broadway) in LESS THAN 2 WEEKS!!! Get your tickets while you still can, there are only 350 available each night and they are starting to move fast... $30 (Dec.30th - w. guests Brickhouse) & $55 (NYE - w. guests Todd Taylor Band) plus service charges available NOW at Zulu, Highlife, Neptoon, Beat Street & the Park Plaza Hotel. Follow this link for ticket outlet addresses and further show details, or buy your tickets directly from our tickets page at www.bonfirepresents.com It's gonna be a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Tell all your friends and let's show these guys that Vancity knows how to giv'er HARD!!! Only 11 DAYS till we're shaking our collective booties like no other band makes us!! Garaj Mahal 2007 Independent Music Awards Winner Blueberry Cave is a winner in the 2007 Independent Music Awards, whose esteemed panel of judges include Peter Gabriel, Ozzy Osbourne, McCoy Tyner, Paul Oakenfold, Suzanne Vega, Cyndi Lauper, Marc Ribot, Buddy Guy, David Grisman, Bebel Gilberto, Bill Frisell, Rob Wasserman and FatBoy Slim. The album was selected as the Winner of the Album - Jam category from the largest number of entries the program has received to date, according to award organizers Music Resource Group. Garaj Mahal will be featured in the 2007 Musician's Atlas and in the on-line Jukebox, their CDs will be available for sale at BordersStores.com, and their winning track, "The Shadow," will be featured on the compilation CD that will be distributed at SXSW and other major festivals. When you hear your first Garaj Mahal note, leading into an innovative fusion of funky jazz with a tasty world music flare, all other thoughts leave your mind as the music takes you on an unforgettable voyage. Fans return to experience the band again and again because they know they will always hear something new and progressive from these four first-class musicians. Featuring guitar and sitar virtuoso Fareed Haque, world-renowned bass master and educator Kai Eckhardt, gospel-inspired funky jazz keyboardist Eric Levy, and consistently in-the-pocket, natural-born drummer Alan Hertz, Garaj Mahal combines a century of musical experience to create a sound that's always new, freshly infused with a wide spectrum of musical expression, and always smoking hot. Touring extensively since their formation in 2000, Garaj Mahal continues to earn critical acclaim and a rowing fanbase thanks to their ability to deliver serious "shut-up-and-listen" grooves while simultaneously bringing the dance floor alive. Their collective musical experience allows them to constantly push the envelope of composition and improvisation. Garaj Mahal's sound – a convergence of jazz-style improvisation, mystical Middle-Eastern atmospheres, and danceable American funk - attracts music lovers from all parts of the spectrum and creates a profoundly unique experience. Each band member dedicates every drop of his education, history, and life-long passion for music to their audience every time they step on stage. The band member's virtuosity is no surprise when you look at even a few of the amazing artists they've performed and/or recorded with over the years, including Dizzy Gillespie, John McLaughlin, Sting, Cassandra Wilson, Dave Holland, Bela Fleck, Chick Corea, Steve Smith, Zakir Hussain, Edgar Meyer, Les Claypool, Trey Anastasio, Umphrey's McGee, MMW, Steve Kimock, and Michael Manring. Garaj Mahal will return to the studio in early 2007 to record their next album. SWEET JAMMIN ACTION!!!
  16. See them on the 30th and leave your options open for what is sure to be a return visit on NYE Beats! THEN... we can charge you $65 at the door for being such an indecisive flake!! LOL
