His story is pretty gnarly and inspiring, although someone as experienced as him should have known not to go solo into the canyons without telling anyone where he was going and when he was due back. I actually had a good chat with him not too long ago when he was hanging out in the bookshop I work at here in Boulder. Really nice guy.

I implore you to name your kid something that everyone knows how to pronounce. Imagine having to tell everyone you meet for the rest of your life how your name should be pronounced.

Actually, I don't agree. I like having an uncommon name. My name is Karin, pronounced Car In. No one ever says name right at first, usually gets pronounced Karen, but I don't mind correcting people. It only gets annoying when I have to tell the same person over and over again. When that happens, I just start implementing negative reinforcement techniques and smack 'em around a bit everytime they say it wrong.

To help people remember how to say my name, I tell them to think of "Karin the garage," that usuallly helps.
