  1. Been spending the past few days on www.jambands.am which is the Armenian hub of jam - pretty vibrant scene over there for sure.

I kind of like my Armenian handle տարօրինակություն better to be honest but it's good to be back all the same...

  2. Hit up Cheapies and Dr Disc in Hamilton yesterday didn't see it in either wondering if anyone found it north of the border.

It wasn't on the list of Canadian releases on the record store day site not sure what the scoop is if anyone saw it or scored it would be interested to know...

  3. Greetings earthlings,

Yes FLAC is the way to go.

J River is supposed to be the best media player but you have to pay for it - Foobar 2000 is free so I would use that one - it works and sounds just fine...

For players, the Fiio X1 player is like $150 which would do the trick, they have a few higher models as well. Yes the Sony players are also supposed to be quite good. A lot of Android phones will handle FLAC no problem as well. If you're Apple all the way it's an obstacle if not you have lots of options.

Good software to go CD->FLAC is called EAC - exact audio copy.

Even if you just have a decent set of headphones it's worth it - memory is cheap now so you may as well have the resolution that was on the original source.

Streaming is great, I've been using Tidal for awhile which is FLAC quality and they have lots of shit that I don't have but I also have tons of shit that they don't have so it's good to have both options at your fingertips.

  4. If anyone is up for Merriweather let me know, have decent seats both nights and hotel.

Would rather see them after they've had a chance to play a bit and going someplace new is always more of an adventure...

  5. Does it have to specifically be a phono input, or could I just plug a record player into an AUX input? Is there a difference between these two types of inputs? --yes phono input is amplified so either you have to get an external phono amp or you buy it in the unit.

I found this used Denon amp but it says "no phono input". Could I plug a record player into an AUX, and if so is there a downside to this?--not without an external phono amp unless you get a turntable with this built in(only on newer and generally cheezy models).

Two channel vs. surround -- Admittedly I have to do some reading up better understand this. My intuitive and uneducated thinking would have been that surround sound is good. If I were to go for a two channel receiver, would I be looking at older models? (i.e. do they still make two channel or did they go exclusively to surround, then dolby 5.1, etc?)--if you spend all of your budget on 2 channel you'll do way better, if you want to listen primarily to music and TV and movies are secondary don't even think twice about it. 2 channel works fine for TV and movies provided everything is set up properly but most surround systems aren't great at reproducing music well.

What Fluffhead77 described is pretty well right on the money--you may need to buy some contact cleaner to clean the switches out if they're scratchy but that's not hard to do at all--just unplug it first and you're good...

  6. I would get an older japanese integrated amp or receiver--Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo with a phono input--some nice pieces out there from the 90's.

Speakers would be a bit of a tough call but if you can get anything britsh for around $100 go for it--Kef, B&W, Mission etc.

Turntable would likely be Japanese to fill the rest of your budget--something late 80's or early 90's vintage from whoever would work.

If you do 2 channel rather than surround you'll do a lot better regardless...

  7. Just noticed this today--didn't buy tix ahead of time and had some TM gift certificates I was going to use up--bummer for sure. Was looking forward to it especially the sound system which was supposed to be top notch.

Neil does what Neil wants to do no doubt about that, when the other dates were cancelled I wondered if this might happen.

It'll still be a good time but the ticket price definitely reflected Neil being on the bill...

  8. I find this site to be hillarious you might too:

    Emails from an asshole

This guy basically messes with people on Craigslist or Kijiji or whatever. I imagine this is what Davey Boy does in his spare time.

Some pretty hilarious ones for sure, here is "Expired Phish ticket" not the best one up there but you get the idea:
