Guest Low Roller
Police hunt for 'stolen' U2 album A rough cut of a new album by U2 has gone missing from a photo shoot - prompting fears it may be posted on the internet months before its release. Police in Nice, in the south of France, said the band had made statements about a possible theft after the shoot at a recording studio in the city. About 20 people are being questioned about the material's disappearance at the Victorine studios on Tuesday. The album, which has not yet been named, is due for release in November. Singer Bono, who has a house on the Cote d'Azur, and his fellow band members went to the police headquarters in Nice on Wednesday. A police spokesman said: "We have to be careful. Was it lost or was it stolen? An inquiry is under way. "We have numerous theories - from the fan who wants the rough cut for his collection to the web specialist who wants to be the first to put it out." The rough cut does not have any great financial value but could be published on the internet in advance of the official release date, he said. U2's latest album, All That You Can't Leave Behind, was voted fourth in a survey of the best albums of the past 10 years released earlier this month. MarcO
Hmmmm. A similar thing happened with rough cuts of what would become arguably their finest recording, Achtung Baby. Bootleg recordings (vinyl! remember?) made their way out well before the official release. I think U2 have a top-notch body of work and are a rare example of a commercially succesful rock band that can stay together and change with the times without betraying their core sound. And they work! I've seen 'em 3 times and one of those gigs (Celtic Park, Glasgow, 1993) is one of the finest gigs I've ever seen. Thanks for the tidbit! Guest Low Roller
I lost interest in U2 after Zooropa. The whole Pop TV thing was a little much. I saw the concert at the Molson Centre back in 2001 (I think)- I was reasonably impressed, but I don't think they justified the $100 price tag on their tickets. I like the older stuff.
