The Grateful Dead

Playin' In The Band

Some folks trust to reason others trust to might,

I don't trust to nothin', but I know it comes out right.

Say it once again now, Whoa, I hope you'll understand

When it's done and over, Lord, a man is just a man.

Playin', playin' in the band. Daybreak, daybreak on the land.

Some folks look for answers others look for fights,

Some folks up in treetops just a looking for their kites.

Whoa, I can tell your future just look what's in your hand,

But I can't stop for nothin' I'm just playing in the band.

Playin', playin' in the band. Daybreak, daybreak on the land.

Standin' on a tower world at my command

You just keep a turnin' while I'm playing in the band.

And if a man among you got no sin upon his hand

Let him cast a stone at me for playing in the band.

Playin', playin' in the band. Daybreak, daybreak on the land.

WWBD? (What would Bobby do?). (He'd be Playin', Playin' In The Band...)

Words by Robert Hunter; Music by Jerry Garcia

Copyright Ice Nine Publishing; used by permission.

Wharf rat down [sung as Old man down]

way down

down, down by the docks of the city,

Blind and dirty

asked me for a dime--

dime for a cup of coffee

I got no dime but

I got time to hear his story:

My name is August West

and I love my Pearly Baker best

more than my wine

...more than My wine

more than my maker

though he's no friend of mine

Everyone said

I'd come to no good

I knew I would

Pearly believed them

Half of my life

I spent doin' time for

some other fu©ker's crime

Other half found me stumbling around

drunk on burgundy wine

But I'll get back

on my feet someday

The good Lord willing

if He says I may

'cause I know the life I'm

livin's no good

I'll get a new start

live the life I should

I'll get up and fly away

I'll get up and

fly away...

...fly away

Pearly's been true

true to me, true to my dying day he said

I said to him:

I'm sure she's been

I said to him:

I'm sure she's been true to you

I got up and wandered

Wandered downtown

nowhere to go

just to hang around

I got a girl

named Bonny Lee

I know that girl's been true to me

I know she's been

I'm sure she's been

true to me

If I'm going to pick only one, then I'm going pick one that sorta summed everything (tour/life/music) up for me when I first seen it live.

Thanks R.H & Jerry.

Fare you well my honey

Fare you well my only true one

All the birds that were singing

Have flown except you alone

Goin to leave this Broke-down Palace

On my hands and my knees I will roll roll roll

Make myself a bed by the waterside

In my time - in my time - I will roll roll roll

In a bed, in a bed

by the waterside I will lay my head

Listen to the river sing sweet songs

to rock my soul

River gonna take me

Sing me sweet and sleepy

Sing me sweet and sleepy

all the way back back home

It's a far gone lullaby

sung many years ago

Mama, Mama, many worlds I've come

since I first left home

Goin home, goin home

by the waterside I will rest my bones

Listen to the river sing sweet songs

to rock my soul

Goin to plant a weeping willow

On the banks green edge it will grow grow grow

Sing a lullaby beside the water

Lovers come and go - the river roll roll roll

Fare you well, fare you well

I love you more than words can tell

Listen to the river sing sweet songs

to rock my soul

My favourite Brokedown is the first one I ever saw live.Hands down.

I'm 17 & travelling with a 17 year girl who folks reported her missing (unknown to us at the time). It was the second night of two shows in Town Park - Telluride CO.

Second/final encore we get it.

Very fitting as the place was a palace.

Was also the last show of my tour that summer, what a send off.So fu©kin sweet.
