Rossolee
Hey Folks- Sarah and I just got back from a phun trip out to Oregon. Along with our good friends Dave and Kelli from Charlotte,NC we traveled around the state. As well as hitting the NWSS with our Portland friends Mike and Colleen. Once we all got situated in Portland, Mike took us to one of Portland's famous Mcmenamin pubs. This one had tons of Grateful Dead memorabilia and music. Not to mention good beer. The Kolsch was tasty! http://www.mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=10&id=313 The next day our first stop was in McMinnville to explore the Evergreen Aviation Museum. Home of the Howard Hughes "Spruce Goose" and many other aircraft and artifacts. The SG alone is worth the price of admission. The plane is bigger than you can imagine... Texas BIG. http://www.sprucegoose.org/ Go figure we ended our afternoon travels at a winery. Lovely view, interesting owners, and some fine local wine. http://www.amityvineyards.com/ We spent the night in Newport on the coast. Home of the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Great place for kids and adults. Lots of interactive exhibits. Aquarium had sea otters, lions, sharks, jellies, octopus etc A great stop http://www.aquarium.org/ Leaving the aquarium we found ourselves in a HUGE traffic jam along the coastal highway. Good time to tax the 4x4 rental. Off route and off road we went to find a way out of the traffic along a dirt road thru the Siuslaw National Forest. Lush forest greens and wildlife made this a great alternate route! Back on pavement we soon stumbled upon this gem of a brewery. Looked a little gypsy, but the beers were some of the finest on the trip! The Chocolate Stout was unreal! http://www.siletzbrewing.com/ Oregon state has more tasty microbreweries you can imagine. We sampled many flavours from a wide variety of brewers(Mcmenamins,Siletz,Widmar,Deshutes,Rogue, Full Sail,Elliot Glacier, Big Horse,Bridgeport) And as you can imagine... I might have forgotten a few ;-P http://www.oregonbeer.org We camped out along the Oregon coast at Oswald West State Park. Great secluded campsites all within walking distance to beautiful cove on the ocean. A local place for Oregon surfers, whom road the waves(or at least tried from dawn 'til dusk. Great camping spot! http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_195.php From the coast we headed up to the mouth of the Columbia River and headed inland towards Hood River. Along the way we stopped in a the Multonamah Falls. http://trips.stateoforegon.com/multnomah_falls/ We spent a couple nights in Hood River in the Columbia Gorge region. World famous for its wind surfing and newer sport- kite surfing along the Columbia river. Hood River Hotel was a convenient spot in this phun, laid back town. Lots of great restaurants! We took the scenic Mt Hood Railroad thru the rolling foothills and orchards of Mt Hood. We road in the caboose which was a hoot! We had a personal tour of the Full Sail Brewery in Hood River. Great tour, and way too many fine ales http://www.hoodriverhotel.com/welcome.html http://www.mthoodrr.com/ http://www.fullsailbrewing.com/ From Hood River we ventured on and around Mt.Hood. We visited Lost Lake with its stunning views of the mountain. A short hike and picnic along the lake we continued along to Timberline Lodge. Views of Mt.Adams in Washington and Mt Jefferson in Oregon could be seen along this route. Timberline Lodge is a National Historic site with amazing views of the Mt and surrounding area. The craftsmanship of the Lodge is amazing! Scenes from the Shining were filmed there as well. We felt good about Hood! http://www.mthood.org/gallery.html http://www.timberlinelodge.com/ Back in Portland and gearing up for the Yonder Mountain String Band festival we all went to Jake's Famous Seafood. Great variety of fresh fish! We all ate too much!! A fine dinner with friends. http://www.jakesfamouscrawfish.com/ Our crew of Kinfolk(Sarah,Kelli,Colleen,Dave,Mike and I) drove into Horning's Hideout on the Friday. Rules about outside beverages have been tightened up a wee bit this year, so we had to use a few Jedi mind tricks to get our 2 vehicles inside with all our tasty cargo. Once inside, we found a great campsite (Mike's usual spot)in the back 40. Horning's venue is in a natural bowl surrounded by forest, greenery and a small lake. Fine picking, jamming all weekend. Mike and Leo have added a drummer, which sounded great. Keller's set had Jeff Austin sit in as well as the Keel's. Yonder sets were pretty much a free for all with the festival guests(sit ins by the Keels,KW,Mike,Vince,Wasserman and many others) Larry Keel and Natural Bridge's set was top notch. Seeing Darol Anger play fiddle with YMSB all weekend was a real treat! I hope festivals can continue at Hornings. Magical place! http://www.stringsummit.com/home.htm http://www.horningshideout.com/ http://www.yondermountain.com/ An awesome trip! Big Thanks to Dave and Kelli, we couldn't of had better friends to travel with. Y'all are Deluxe! As well much Thanks to Mike and Colleen for putting us up in Portland, great Oregon travel tips and the airport p/u and drop-offs.
