Calexico, Iron & Wine Preview EP In New York

By Michael D. Ayers, N.Y.

Calexico gave fans a taste of its upcoming EP with Iron & Wine last night (July 14) during a free show in New York's Battery Park. At the end of its set, the group invited Iron & Wine mastermind Sam Beam on stage to debut the songs "He Lays in the Reins" and "Prison on Route 41" from "In the Reins," due Sept. 20 via Overcoat Recordings.

The artist's collaborative tour in support of the EP will begin on the West Coast in October and hit the East Coast by mid-November. Both bands will play full sets, then team for a set with each other. "We're going to bring along several guests this fall, including jugglers and fire-eaters," Calexico's Joey Burns joked.

As previously reported, Calexico has already recorded some material for its next Touch & Go album, which should be out by next spring. Several new tunes were played last night, including "All Systems Red" and "Bisbee Blue."

The group has three songs on the soundtrack to the new Don Roos film "Happy Endings," which also includes actress Maggie Gyllenhaal's rendition of Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are." The set is due Aug. 2 via Commotion.
