Stingrays attacked after Irwin death

BRISBANE September 13 2006

At least 10 stingrays have been found dead and mutilated on Australia's eastern coast since Steve Irwin was killed by one of them last week.

Officials last night warned against revenge attacks on the normally docile fish.

The star was killed when a stingray barb pierced his chest as he filmed a show off the Great Barrier Reef. The dead stingrays have been found on two beaches in Queensland. Two discovered yesterday had their tails lopped off.

Michael Hornby, executive director of Irwin's conservation group Wildlife Warriors, said he was concerned they were being hunted and killed in retaliation for the death.

"We are disgusted and disappointed," he said.
