paisley Posted August 2, 2003 Report Share Posted August 2, 2003 ever since Saddam opened free state run colleges and universities in the early 80s and encouraged women to become educated and join the labour force, bin Laden has denounced Hussein as an infidel for running the second most western-style country in the middle east and has often threatened him. Before the first gulf war, Iraq had the lowest illiteracy rate in the middle east and one of the highest standards of living of any country in the region. Before the sanctions imposed in 1991 Iraq was a very prosperous place and the state made no efforts to adhere to the laws of Islam. Bin Laden has announced he stands behind the people of Iraq but he is just as happy as the Americans to see Saddam toppled. He hates the guy.
