Disc Review:

THE JIMMY SWIFT BAND

Weight Of The World (Below Me Music)

Rating: NNN

Halifax's Jimmy Swift Band sometimes describe their sound as rocktronica, but that's not terribly accurate. Sure, they do have a keyboard player who drops some synth textures here and there, but this is primarily alternative rock music with some jam band tendencies. They're all good players and execute their genre-hopping pretty seamlessly. But even if their interest in electronic music isn't that prominent in the actual music, the influence of dance music on the rhythm section may be what keeps them from falling into that plodding, boring whine that too much alt-rock succumbs to.

The Jimmy Swift Band play Saturday (January 13) at the Horseshoe.
