If you're running Windows, and you bring up the "Sounds and Audio Devices" control panel, in the "Sounds" tab, there's a pull-down menu for "Sound Scheme," which will let you turn sounds on or off for various things. What I've done is use the "No Sounds" scheme so that my PC doesn't make any sounds to me at all (which is useful when doing things like making analog transfers of recordings).
