Late Grateful Dead leader's artwork to be featured on labels

-

A new brand of wine will honor late Grateful Dead singer/guitarist Jerry Garcia. Winemarker Erik Olsen is overseeing the production of the J. Garcia Wines, which will be bottled at the Clos du Bois winery in Geyserville, California.

Three wines are included in the initial release -- a 2002 Sonoma County Chardonnay, a 2000 Sonoma County Merlot and a 2000 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon -- and all three feature a label with Garcia's artwork. A fourth wine, a Zinfandel, might be added before year's end.

Garcia actually had a connection to the region where his namesake wine is produced, as he briefly attended high school in Sonoma County. "Wine is omnipresent in Northern California," says Dead historian Dennis McNally. "You can't drive north from San Francisco without running into some part of its production. Jerry actually started his first band in the region. And he always liked a glass of good wine."

A reception marking the brand's launch will be held at the Michael Martin Gallery in San Francisco on October 30th, featuring a showing of Garcia's artwork.
