Zaphod’s owner Eugene Haslam recovering from stroke

Let’s all send warm thoughts Eugene Haslam’s way. The well-known owner of Zaphod Beeblebrox and recent city council candidate had been dropping hints over Twitter for the past few weeks that he’d been hospitalized, and on Tuesday Haslam revealed the reason behind that hospital stay: complications from a stroke.

Turns out Haslam fell ill in mid-December while vacationing in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. He said in a press release that he’s now been released from the Ottawa Civic Hospital and is recovering at home. He also announced he’d be turning over his duties as Zaphod’s entertainment and marketing director to long-time associate Dave Ward. It’s hard to imagine a Zaphod’s without Haslam, who founded the club at its current location in 1992, at the helm – it’d sort of be like Jeopardy without Alex Trebek, or a Playboy mansion without Hugh Hefner. So here’s hoping for a swift and speedy recovery for one of the icons of Ottawa’s music scene.

Aloha,

Brad
