kc
This Ain't Hollywood presents the return of Brooklyn's IKEBE SHAKEDOWN - www.ikebeshakedown.com/ with special guests: SOUND ONE - www.facebook.com/soundone Guest Selector: JON SIKICH Tuesday, Mar. 26, 2013 at This AIn't Hollywood, 345 James St. North www.thisainthollywood.ca Doors: 9pm, $10 IKEBE SHAKEDOWN, the self-titled album from the Brooklyn-based band, plays with elements of cinematic soul, Afro-funk, deep disco, and boogaloo in all the right ways. After spending a few years together the group, named after a favorite Nigerian boogie record (and pronounced “ee-KAY-bayâ€), delivers a driving set of tunes featuring a mighty horn section anchored by tight, deep-pocketed grooves. “Right now in cities across the globe, there are plenty of great Afrobeat revivalist bands aping the sound and groove of Fela Kuti’s legendary sound. Yet, surprisingly few of the new groups have strayed from an orthodox interpretation of the genre or done much real innovation…Ikebe Shakedown is here to change that. The band takes signature Afrobeat elements—big unison horns, slinky bass lines, tight little guitar licks—and blends them with tasty grooves culled from ’70s-style horn-driven funkâ€. – Marlon Bishop, WNYC SOUND ONE play Ska the way it was done 50 years ago, with heart and soul. No gimmicks, it's all about playing as hot as they can and avoiding the tired "Ska" cliches and format. Feel the nostalgia. These fellas and lady bring you back to a time where horn sections were applauded and heavy groove carried a sense of pride, the band believes full heartily in the soulful lining of their hard work. Live in an instrumental state of mind and set your conscious free. Join the ska-jazz dance party that lets your body sweat, your ear drums jump and your feet pulse. Influences:The Skatalites, Prince Buster, The Baba Brooks Band, Lynn Taitt Press: “Ikebe Shakedown re-creates the kind of vibrant vintage funk that sends crate-digging DJs into spasms of joy…†– TimeOut New York “I couldn’t help but feel as if I was listening to a modern day soundtrack from the likes of Curtis Mayfield or Willie Hutch. The album carries a certain soulful grit; so much so that it’s easy to get lost in present-day reality. “Is this seriously from 2011?†I often wondered. You see, at its core, Ikebe Shakedown isn’t trying to be funk. It just is…one of the best releases of the year†– OkayPlayer’s Revivalist (9.0 review) “Ikebe Shakedown has a sound that is undeniably all their own†– KEXP, Seattle “Tight, hard charging and “Hard Steppin†— doing their thing with abundant classic stateside instro funk influences, too! It says a lot that these guys are making a welcome entry to the east coast scene…†– Dusty Groove America “Hard Steppin’…is…the perfect soundtrack for the unwritten Tarantino movie of your imagination, and should be listened to while driving fast, preferably towards danger.†– WNYC “We’re talking serious dance music that makes them stand alone…it’d be good to see them on the European festival circuit†– Gerry Hectic – Fly, UK
