RIP - Dave Brockie [GWAR]

Dave Brockie, frontman of heavy metal group GWAR, has been found dead in his Virginia home on Sunday evening. He was 50.

Brockie's death was confirmed by Richmond, Virginia police, WTVR reports.

Brockie founded GWAR, the heavy metal group known for performing in elaborate costumes, make-up and alter-egos. Brockie went by the name Oderus Urungus on stage.

"Dave was one of the funniest, smartest, most creative and energetic persons I've known," former bassist Mike Bishop told Richmond, Va's alternative paper Style Weekly.

Police do not suspect foul play, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported. The band will be issuing an official statement later on Monday.

The group has been active for 30 years and recently completed a tour of Japan. In 2011, Cory Smoot, a guitarist with the band, was found dead.

Yeah, same. I was perplexed when I saw the story on the CBC Ottawa page.

My introduction to GWAR was via their cameo in Empire Records. I was very confused, and still didn't think they were a real band for a while after that.
