Driver sues Montreal union over traffic jam

MONTREAL - A Montreal driver has launched a class-action suit against city workers whose protest caused him a half-hour delay in traffic this past September.

The Quebec Superior Court has authorized the lawsuit to go ahead.

Boris Coll's lawyer is claiming that the Sept. 17 demonstration was a deliberate infringement of his client's freedom of movement.

"To be told you can't go where you want, by someone who is doing something they are not supposed to do, is insulting," said lawyer Bruce Johnston. "Our client was offended by that."

On the day in question, about 400 blue-collar city workers slowly drove their trucks through the streets around city hall, horns blaring.

Coll wants $650 in compensation from the workers' union, plus punitive damages, to make up for being stuck for about 30 minutes in the monster jam that resulted.

Johnston acknowledges that being stuck in traffic is completely normal, especially in the part of Old Montreal where Coll works. But he still thinks Coll has a case because of the nature of the September incident.

"It's quite different if someone decides to make you late by parking in the middle of the road. That is an illegal act and it is clear you can get compensation for that."

Johnston says if everyone else affected by the demonstration joins the class-action suit and is compensated, the blue-collar workers' union faces a bill of up to $6.5 million.

...for years, me and my friend stu have been forming a class action suit against our friend hunsberger. having known hunsberger for a number of years, and having been subjected to his nonsensical reasoning, perpetual techno, and general sloppiness, we have determined we are entitled to pretty much everything he has.

anyone who knows hunsberger (eric or mk, etc..) are welcome to join the class action in hopes of someday recovering our emotional and sanitary losses. granted, the chances of ever seeing a dime are slim (its hunsberger, remember), but its been great fun hassling the huns.

...there may ba a counter-sue in the works. its a risk we all have to take. merry christmas!
