  1. should have crossed the streams sooner
  2. Wow. We went to NOLA and Nashville, and Chicago the summer before, I found them distinctly different from each other, and from Southern Ontario, the place I'm most familiar with. I find the states feels more dangerous than I found Toronto to be, that said, if you know the wrong folks in Toronto, you can find a lot of trouble. My main concern was the prevalence of weapons in the States mostly, but the same problem can come up if you are in the wrong place in any big city it seems. I'd describe it like this... New Orleans is poor and black, so if you are uncomfortable with black folks stay away from NOLA. I'm not afraid of black people, I'm afraid of poverty, and it seemed that the reality was that people in New Orleans don't have much, and will take your money if they are given an opportunity, but they aren't generally looking for trouble, black or white. Nashville on the other hand felt like a place where rich kids come to play, and while no one was looking at your wallet, they might decide to deck you just to prove how tough they are. Nashville welcomes tourists... on Broadway... stay out of the rest of the city unless you have a guide. New Orleans has poor areas, but there don't seem to be any "no go zones" like I would say exist in the south side of Chicago. If you don't flaunt any wealth, you should be fine. I kept my cash and id in my front pocket, and didn't really carry anything else, so I didn't attract much attention. Walk around with a camera and a back pack in your shorts and golf shirt at midnight in NOLA and you will find trouble... just like in any other place where stupid tourists get jacked. Don't be a tourist, be a traveler.
  3. I was in NOLA for the first time this past september and I am absolutely without question trying to find an excuse to move to that city for the rest of my days. That lineup is incredible! P.E. Crazy!
  4. Lobster claw harmonica still in the original package!?!?!?!? what??
  5. HA! but now....i get the best of both worlds' date=' an OCMS show on the friday and the wedding of a good buddy on saturday. [/quote'] And now after having self-wedding'd-ing myself redemption comes in the form of... my wife?!?!?!? I wake up this morning and last night while working a night-shift she decided to book tickets to something truly awesome... after we spend six nights in New Orleans we're heading to Nashville to attend the induction of OCMS into the Grand'Ole Opry!!!! First Lady of Giv'er ftw, yo. :dazed:
  6. Anyone see the short on Dominican Baseball players dying from roids the other day on the Ceebs? Good piece. Apparently we need more of that kind of journalism.
  7. Did that kid at 1:35 land on his face, cause the rest of the video sure did. amazing... so funny
  8. Your right. Why have laws apply to sports at all? We should let all sports be bloodsports... sounds just as reasonable as letting a bunch of poor kids chase the dream of a giant contract and then telling them that they should do drugs to help them compete. Roller, you're being an ass. It's not just the successful dudes who do drugs. There's a whole bunch of fucked up bro's who need a bunch of fucked up health care because they really thought they could make it, and took that route, only to find they still fell short and now, luckily, they get to remember all of their efforts (which btw were of course choices made totally in a vacuum away from the rest of society and entirely independently by perfectly rational teenagers) every time they have a bout of inexplicable rage. Let's not forget that if a twenty year old catcher has been on drugs for five years, he's been doing them since fifteen. So you think it should be perfectly legal to try and convince fifteen year old Dominican kids that they should do steroids to help get their families on their feet? Nice. Real thoughtful stuff here today.
  9. Thanks brother. That goes good with coffee.
  10. but while I was visiting Victoria over the past week for a conference I had occasion to meet an interesting man. His name is Michael Asch, and he is the son of the man who founded Folkways records. About ten of us were having a meeting at his house and we had just finished talking when my close friend Josh whispered into my ear that Michael's wife was willing to bring us down to the basement to see the collection. I gasped, nodded slowly, and then I was led down a set of somewhat rickety steps into an archive the likes of which I don't expect to see again soon. Along a wall about fifteen feet long was a set of shelves that held records from floor to ceiling. Still sealed in the original plastic, the shelves held a copy of each and every recording that Folkways had produced. They were, to the last, the very first record pressed of each recording. From poetry written and read aloud by Allen Ginsburg, Nikki Giovanni and Angela Davis, to original recordings by Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and 'Trane. And beyond these, recordings made of Cree and Mohawk religious music, Malian folk-singers, Tibetan monks. A priceless collection. I feel blessed to have seen it, if not to have been able to crack the seal on those palettes and spin them just once each to get a real sense of what treasure can be held in a dusty basement. The only other archive of Folkways recordings that's in such condition is held in the Smithsonian. Maybe I'll get a chance to spin their copies one day. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folkways_Records http://www.folkways.si.edu/
  11. I can't figure out how to copy the image right now cause im in a hurry but crynaldo looks so flipping scared in the pic DB 2.0 posted above... He looks so horrified! That's fucking hilarious! What would he do if he was a basketball player?
  12. Me and karma have a deal. Karma leaves me alone, and I leave karma alone. Me and Geddy tend to roll with circumstance and free will, but again, carry on.
  13. I've generally found letter carriers to be the otherwise unemployable, but carry on.
  14. I'm hoping for a Bayern/Dortmund- all-Deutschland final... so expect the opposite. Ollie'd
  15. London is under about three feet of water, but its not so bad. Now I have a pond in my neighbors back yard with ducks in it.
  16. "And once you're done with that, you can, um, lay on the ground."
  17. I saw a guy do that with a wheely of gravel once. Follow-up: I didn't say the guy's arm was ripped off, it was just really nasty watching him dance around while the skin was all that was holding the twisting mess together.
  18. It was just fucking dangling there!!!!! Holy motherfucker!!!!!! OWWWWWCHHHHHHHHH second most disturbing thing I've seen in sports. The first was an early World's Strongest Man Comp. on a satellite feed where an arm-wrestling match led to a forearm explosion that looked similar, except that the guy who broke it slammed the back of the guys broken arm-hand into the table and then jumped up and tried to run away... they were strapped together. god it hurts remembering that. you're welcome.
