  1. That was so much fun!! (the whole band can't stop saying that, seriously) Here's a few samples. I only got the first set w/ a little condenser microphone on my MD, but there were other tapers there who got everything via the soundboard.. should be available soon ...the sound guy was really, really bad.

Well, the cab was used on stage and at their jam space in the late '60s and early 70's, you can see glimpses of it on the sunshine daydream video from the august

'72 veneta oregon show, a special show indeed....

after '72 they started to get into the first versions of the wall of sound (which i think i just aquired one 15" speaker cab from that too!) therefor the use of their own amps became a thing of the past while the WOS was happening. This cab then went to bob weirs home studio where he used it up until 1986 where he then gave them (there are 2 of these baby's but the guy is keeping the other one) to matthew kelley from kingfish, he used them until a legal matter came up in regards to all the deads old stuff, after jerry died i believe, that required matt kelly to give them back.

The dust settled, a bunch of old gear went into storage and was forgotten about. They ended up at John Harrison's shop, he worked for the dead in the WOS era, reconing speakers, and was and is good friends with steve parish, jerry's main roadie. He had a bunch of stuff, weir's 2 cabs, 4 old jbl speakers that came out of one of jerry's old amps, and 4 or 5 WOS speaker cabs. They guy i got it from was hunting on the web for old vintage speakers, he found this dude in northern california who had a bunch of them so he called him up. They got to chatting, turned out that my friend was a deadhead and the guy with the speakers used to work for the dead 30 years ago and he might be interested in some other stuff he had!!!! ie weirs cabs etc etc!! My friend hung up the phone, rented a van, and drove right away from atlanta georgia to San Fransisco where he bought everything he had.... then drove home and set it up in his jam space, he's a airline pilot by day, a jamming deadhead by night. I stumbled upon the cab on ebay of course, watching it everyday, waiting to see how much it would go for and who would get it... the last 5 minutes came and the reserve had not been met, the last minute came up, my heart racing and i bid BOOM! 3000 GRAND US!!!! and to my delight and complete suprize... i got it, shit, my new friend even got a email from mark karan, who plays for ratdog, inquiring about the cab, others have offered him 5000 us for his other cab.... shit, boy am i lucky. Although i got boned by the shipping people, good safe shipping for 900US !!!!! fuck, now i am hella broke, in debt, but i got bob's cab and i too am a weir head... It came with a letter of provinence from the grateful dead stating it was aquired from them... woo hoo!! there you go, the whole story!!

  4. They were from Whistler and occasionally reunite for the odd gig. Last time I saw them was 3 years ago at the Commodore - the crowd was full of cougars in leather and high-heels, no longer any trace of their jambandy beginnings.

After making 'Mule' they had some falling-out with the record company because it was bending them over and giving them the ol' auger in the ass. I know, I know.. a record company screwing-over a band?? Unbelieveable, but apparantly true.

So then they broke-up and the rhythm (Bob Weir-ish) guitarist is some kinda recluse somewhere in Whistler now. Chad, the lead singer and guitarist, now has a band called Sweaty Cheddar - I saw them once and left early - good playing etc., but otherwise pretty lame. Geoff, the drummer, is in a million bands - total band whore... I forget his latest band, but it's a large, touring/recording act which pays him well. He's a cool dude.

  5. IMO they're much better than STS9. They are a lot more upbeat, and unlike sound tribe, they're improvisation actually goes places and arrives, if you will. For a young band, they're very talented, and for an electronica act, they're great. I'm all about the livetronica so.......

    whoa

Lotus is noooooo STS9, I think they have a good vibe, but as far as musicianship and originality go, they are not even remotely close to STS9. However, they are extremely young so it'll be interesting to see how their music matures in the future.

  6. Once again the Backstage/Upstage Lounge(s) on Granville Island is the place to be for NYE in Vancouver.

It will be open until 3am with a special permit.

    December 31, 2005

    New Years Eve Extravaganza

    Upstage Lounge:

    Themasses (funk/house/jam) 10:30 - 12:30 w/ countdown

    Greenroom (old skool funk) 1:00 - 3:00

    Backstage Lounge:

    Threat From Outer Space (hip hop/punk/funk) 10:30 - 12:30

    Free Flow (high energy soul/hip hop) 1:00 - 3:00

The entire huge patio will be covered again this year to accomodate smokers of all kinds, champagne at midnight, trippy visuals and lighting from the new XZYZX Productions, special guests, even bigger and better than last years hugely successful NYE celebration!

Tickets are $40 from the Backstage Lounge and Ticketmaster in advance, $45 at the door - each band will also have a limited number of $30 tickets available soon. It will sell out again this year so you don't want to wait till the last minute...

    :P

  7. Why didn't the reviewer mention the opener: a little band called Gov't Mule, fronted by a guy named Warren. They're pretty good.

I was at that show and I though it was OK at best. (very wanky) -- and I like moe - seen them 6 times or so. Great opening 3 or 4 songs and then they whipped out their wangs and spanked them raw for the rest of the night. There was a discernable moment when I was released from the grips of the show (during Hi-lo) and realized that the music had suddenly lost all of its appeal. It made me realize that moe is no longer the young, hungry, exciting band they used to be. They seemed to be going through the motions with some very weak new material. Of course it wasn't all bad, but definately fell on the disappointing side of things by the end. I give it a 'meh 1/2'.

  8. CTMF this year - meh... There were TWO - count em' TWO bands that covered Stairway to Heaven. Along with countless other Zepplin/AC-DC covers. There was also that unscheduled band that was put on at 9:30-11pm on the Sunday night (prime time slot) that sucked more than any other band has attempted to suck ever. What was up with that?? It made the festival feel like a white trash field party instead of a professional production. There were too many bands there and too many of them had no business being on stage. The few good bands played at weird times or were put in-between crappy ones (there were a few exceptions) - for a festival that's been going for many years, I was surprised at how half-assed it was.

Evolve: Didn't really do it for me this year either: no real headliners, bad overlapping, bad DJ's (I like DJ's, just not crappy ones) and no pageantry or ambience, where was the spirit?

Promoters: put livetronica bands on AT NIGHT - it just makes sense.

I think if the right person gets behind it, then southern Ontario could have a great festival.
