Can I pick some buildings in Ottawa area that are world-class? If we're picking examples of sweet buildings a propos of nothing these top the list. Off the top of my head:
War Museum
National Gallery
Parliament
Chateau Laurier
Museum of Civilisation
USA Embassy (interior)
Aga Khan building
Canada and the World Pavilion
Nepean City Hall
Old City Hall is kind of neat but not in the same category as above.
There is plenty of ugly stuff in Ottawa, but it's very easy (apparently) to forget about the excellent stuff.
And yes, agree that city planning is crap in Ottawa. Zoning and builders need to do much much better. But nothing is going to change.

Picking two buildings out of a massive city does not a conclusion make.

I heard they started a little earlier than 9pm last night in Montreal. I saw this in a Prince thread on Jambands.ca

Don't forget leg cramps!!

The last after-party in Ottawa was his full band, Maceo, Larry Graham playing at Olliver's at Carleton for 4 hours straight. After the 3-hour show at the NAC. No idea about this tour but I'd expect it's the same. Anyone know for sure?

Not going to the show proper, but if details of the Ottawa after-show emerge please post here.

Jesus. I've seen these guys opening for people at Babylon and Barrymore's. Well done. Too bad you'll never play clubs again though.

I don't care if there's booze or not.

You'll have to line up outside, so dress appropriately. Maybe get there 45 minutes before doors? I dunno. Not sure what that scene will be like.
Be prepared for a terrible venue. Look up the Dan Mangan thread in the Ottawa Shows forum for more of my thoughts and a really touching reply from the promoter.

Has anyone found good deals on portable hard-drives with all the sales going on? Need something ideally 2 TB that doesn't require a power plug-in (hence the portable part).
If you've found any good deals please share!!

Sorry, didn't realize there was cost component to the discussion. I was just listing good burgers in town.
You can do Hintonburger for under $10 for sure. I haven't had nor heard any complaints, what's been the most common beef? (pardon the pun). They are closing the shack on 22 December and moving into their new place after that.
Chez Lucien, their burgers are $10.95 I believe which gets you the delicious burger, a generous portion of fries and salad. I believe the Manx burger specials are usually $13 - $14, again with fries and salad. Vera's is cheaper, around the same as Hintonburger. Art-Is-In is about $10 for just the burger (it's totally worth it though). Black Cat is about the same as the Manx price-wise.

I forgot to put Vera's in my post above. I don't think it's in the same league as the others I posted but I'd certainly put it ahead of Five Guys.
(I'm not anti- Five Guys, I find their burgers delicious, I just find these other burgers more delicious. Five Guys is excellent when out of town cuz I know I'll get a good burger without taking a chance on an unknown local spot)

I went to a co-worker's wedding where the first dance was "With or Without You" by U2. I was convinced they'd never read the lyrics.

Any recommendations for an antivirus for Mac OS X? I use free ClamXav right now but it seems to just be a scanner; not sure it offers any real-time protection.
I'd also like to get an answer for this. Right now I don't have any installed protection on my Mac and it makes me super nervous.

Thanks, I'll give that dude a call when I get a chance!

Hello, long time no see.
I am looking for someone in Ottawa who can repair a bowl that is neither pottery nor ceramic, but similar to both. Does anyone know any craftspeople who could be trusted to do a professional job repairing an inlaid stone bowl? I will pay for such a service.
PM me if you have a recommendation or would like more details.
Thanks

I avoid the venue if at all possible. Last worthwhile event I saw there was Norm Macdonald and it was good, largely due to the format of the show. But, here are my thoughts on the venue for music shows.
1) It's a bad-sounding room
2) It's been a sauna for every summer show I've seen there
3) Zero ambiance - it's a stale high-school auditorium
4) Waiting in line to get a good seat sucks. Don't know of a way around that other than to reserve seats, and that's probably too much work for the return
5) The seats have minimal leg-room and it's tough for tall people, especially when you get sassed by the security for standing anywhere, even behind the sound-board out of the way of the doors
6) Drink selection is pretty poor - COLD water, pop, Gatorade, etc would be great.
7) Can't recall if there's a coat check in winter. Anyone?
But I'd rather see every show I ever see in that terrible room than hear Dan Mangan rasp out another terrible song, so perhaps this is the wrong thread for me.
A letter from a neighbour: Mayor Watson, how ugly is Ottawa?

And what I / Sloth said goes for many cities, not just Ottawa. Vancouver / Montreal / Toronto / Winnipeg / Calgary / Halifax / St. John's / and everywhere in between have lots worth looking at. And lots that is garbage.
