  1. I need help finding a store (online or in Ottawa) that can print low quantities of square photo collages (no, not Instagram). Sizes needed are 20 inch x 20 inch and 1 foot by 1 foot. By 'low quantity' I mean 1 copy of each. I have the collages made and the frames bought, just need to turn the softcopy into hardcopy.

CostCo / Blacks etc can't do square photos and they can't do this large or combination of size and shape.

Do you know of either a physical store in Ottawa or an online store where I can get this done without it costing an arm and a leg? Thank you in advance!

  2. whoa. the lineup for the rest of the day of free shows at Yonge-Dundas Square is equally as impressive as the headliner...

    The Flaming Lips

    Of Montreal

    The Soundtrack Of Our Lives

    Ceremony

    Art Vs. Science

    Oberhofer

    Hollerado

(this is according to Chromewaves , not entirely clear if this was officially announced or not.)

  3. I see your point, but any moderately competent chef uses technique, experience, creativity, improvisation and knowledge of complementary flavours and styles to turn ANY ingredients into above-average cuisine. Surely you agree with that - it's pretty much the job description. Any chef that believes they are handcuffed with a less-than-ideal ingredient isn't trying hard enough.

Don't understand your point about San Marzano tomatoes - are you saying canned San Marzanoes aren't available at Loblaws? Cuz they are at Costco. I saw saffron at Loblaws yesterday even. Not exactly local - maybe they can hop on the same plane as the truffle and olive oils and mozzarella etc.

Yes, it's not home chef and they're cooking with someone else's money for a tv show, but it'd be nice to see above-average skills applied to everyday ingredients to make fine dining cuisine. Not gonna happen though.

It's a silly debate; I take credit for most of it. :)

  4. I don't see any issue with Top Chefs shopping at loblaws. A good chef should be able to cook anything, and more importantly should be able to find the best ingredients at Loblaws (ie they should know how to find the best tomato in a pile of so-so tomatoes). They're professionals and if they can only shop at the highest-end food store then it's not truly testing their skill, improv, judgement etc. Remember Top Chef had challenges where the ingredients come from a vending machine and corner store.

I shop at Loblaws and have no formal training or experience and I can make some delicious food. A Top Chef should be able to blow people out of the water given the same ingredients.

Shopping at Whole Foods or Mcewans would be nice if everyone could do it, but it's not possible. Show the skill and knowledge of the chef. Shop at specialty stores for specialty ingredients.

I do see both sides to it but I don't see chefs shopping at a normal grocery store as sad, I see it as normal. Or they should be at St Lawrence Market. :)
