  1. WATERMELON SLIM is the hottest name in Blues right now—with a total of SIX Blues Music Award Nominations in 2008—including Entertainer of the Year, Band of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Traditional Blues Male Artist of the Year, and Traditional Blues Album of the Year.

Watermelon Slim has set a record of twelve Blues Music Award nominations over the last two years!

Plus he has also won MOJO magazine's Best Blues Album of the Year for the second year in a row.

Needless to say Pepper Jack's is very pleased to be welcoming back Slim this September for a solo performance on Thursday, Sept. 11th, 2008.

Bill Homans, a.k.a. "Watermelon Slim" is one of the most intriguing bluesmen out there. Watermelon Slim first appeared on the music scene in the early 1970s as the only Vietnam veteran to record a full length LP during the war.

In subsequent years, Slim played with a variety of famous blues stars, but only recently has he become a full-time bluesman.

Less than six months after leaving his last truck driving job, hauling industrial waste, Slim was making a living as a full-time touring bluesman. The decision was predominantly the result of a nearly fatal heart attack, and the renewed perspective on mortality that followed. Logically, why drive

industrial waste around Oklahoma to dispose of when one can drive band mates around the US to play music and entertain?

Now that Slim has received a record twelve Blues Music Award

nominations in the United States, he is the new 'King of the Blues'.

  2. Definitely one of the highlights of last year for me at Pepper Jack's. This "arkestra" exceeded the hype at their Hamilton show. The Guelph Jazz fest has now caught on and is sponsoring their Toronto Lula Lounge show as well as their 2 appearances at this years Guelph Jazz Fest.

There will be 14 of them this time. Probably the biggest band to ever play Pepper Jack's. Check them out!

New York City's Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber have been described as a Miles Davis Bitches Brew for the 21st century with players conversant in a plethora of post-modern musical tongues. A post-everything fusion orchestra.

The 14 member band includes 2 vocalist virtuosos, 2 drummers, 2 bassists, a full-on brass and wind section that includes 2 bari, 2 alto, and 2 tenor saxophones, trumpet, trombone, bass clarinet, flute, tuba and occasionally even turntables and didgeridoo.

"A multiracial jam army that freestyles with cool telekinesis between the lustrous menace of Miles Davis' On The Corner, the slash-and-om of 1970s King Crimson, and Jimi Hendrix' moonwalk across side three of Electric Ladyland."- David Fricke, Rolling Stone.

Zaki Ibrahim's music is captivating and vibrant. It's thick with poetics and steeped in a delicious mixture of earnest emotion and social commentary. Zaki's path continues to progress, layering new experiences on top of each other that uniquely influence her musical ventures, culminating in her most recent project, eclectica (episodes in purple).

Zaki's road has been paved with creative encounters that have propelled her forward – from a childhood steeped in musical influences, to performing at Capetown's historic Armchair Theatre, then touring Canada with South Africa's Tumi and the Volume, the Roots and Bedouin Soundclash, to collaborating with famed DJ/Producer King Britt, to now.

With a full length album in the works, Zaki will continue to break new ground, challenge assumptions and step outside her comfort zone. Her philosophy of making connections based on a mutual admiration for expression, creativity and the power of words, directs Zaki's path. Expect the unexpected as Zaki continues to grow as an artist.

  4. Rory has done quite well for himself as far as getting flown all over the continent to play his shows. Hamilton is rather lucky to be having him here tonight.

the Hamilton Spectator even had the event in the Best Bets section yesterday.

    This Friday...

    Stones Throw Records recording artist..

KOUSHIK(dj set, with some live PA)

    worklesshard_pic_4.jpg

    http://www.stonesthrow.com/koushik/

Koushik specializes in making that hazy, hip-hop-based downbeat sh*t that you could easily compare to contemporaries such as Four Tet (who released Koushik's first single on his Text label), RJD2, and DJ Shadow. What sets Koushik apart from the others is a beautiful '60s psych-pop element that tends to pervade throughout. It shows itself in the spacious panned strings, acoustic guitars, and harpsichords that fall in and out of each other; and the beats have a harder regimented classic true school hip-hop sound, that Fourtet and Prefuse tend to stray away from. But what I truly love about this record is Koushik's voice. His singing is soft and mixed way down in the center of the track, sounding like the voice choirs you'd hear on one of those old Percy Faith or 101 Guitars from the late-'60s. If you're a fan of any of the aforementioned artists, you need this record.
