  1. If this was 5 years ago I would certainly be going this Friday whether I had a ticket or not.

I really hope they have "it" still. Good luck y'all. May colonal forbin be with you.

really, the vibe meter is going to be buried when they 1st take the stage. I'm sure the hairs will be standing on the back's of everyones necks for the whole nostalgia of it all.

Montreal's beloved six-piece, THE UNITED STEEL WORKERS OF MONTREAL, have wowed audiences from coast to coast with the infectious draw of their unique brand of blue-collar alt-country. A potent mix of blues, jazz, country and swing, The USWM’s live performances are filled out with dry wit, tall tales and some outright lies. Dancing is optional but hard to avoid.

Following in the wake of their critically acclaimed albums, Broken Trucks and Bottles and Kerosene & Coal, THREE ON THE TREE sees the band branching out from their earthy, acoustic-country-punk roots to experiment with gospel (Jesus We Sweat), historical ballads (Mary Gallagher), Spanish horn arrangements (Glen Jones) and thundering premonitions of death (Three Hard Knocks). Lead singer Gern f., guitarist Shawn 'Gus' Beauchamp and electric guitar master Matthew Watson each pour a diverse helping of tunes into the mélange. Rockabilly bassist Eddy Blake and banjo/mandolin player Chris Reid's combined upbeat, energetic stylings give the album an unmistakable pop and swing. Huge in heart, narrative scope and emotion, THREE ON THE TREE swoops down over the industrial grimness of Shot Tower sashaying through the street-level social turbulence of What a Riot and peers into a delicate room where lead singer Felicity Hamer's velvety vocals balance the melody of Little Girl like a frail tea-cup on her saucer. All of the most loved conventions of The USWM's previous work are represented, from the stirring rallying cries of Rise Up and The Line to light hearted foot stomping romps like Making Babies and Lorelei.

High Places is Mary Pearson and Rob Barber. Mary and Rob met while Mary was completing a music degree in bassoon performance at Western Michigan University and Rob was working in visual art, teaching lithography and etching at a New York art school. Both were performing as solo musicians at the time, Mary as Transformation Surprise, and Rob as the Urxed After becoming fast friends, Mary relocated to New York from Michigan in late spring 2006, and the two soon after began collaborating under the name High Places in May of 2006. The name refers to a place where one has a better vantage point and can gain broader perspective; it references a love for mountains, rooftops, and of course metaphorical "high places."

High Places' songs contain a fascinating range of aural layers: bells and bird calls over a wash of ocean waves; mallets hitting mixing bowls over treated guitar and glockenspiel; Mary's reflective vocals over Rob's homemade beats. The result is an imaginative and spacious amalgamation of sounds with a unique, almost Caribbean undertone that is as immediate as it is refreshing.

They played their first show in may of 2006 in North Adams MA, with Japanther, after Rob, who was scheduled to play solo, didn't want to perform alone. They wrote the set in three days. A few weeks later they finished a six song demo CD-R, and left for their first US tour. They began by releasing a number of singles as well as contributing songs to a few compilations. In the Summer of 2008, They duo signed with Chicago label Thrill Jockey Records. The early singles and varied works were collected and released in July of 2008 as 03/07-09/07, and their debut S/T full length followed in September of 2008. High Places tours almost constantly, and have toured with such notable bands; Deerhunter, No Age, Abe Vigoda, Ponytail, Soft Circle, Lucky Dragons and Hawnay Troof.

Winter Gloves began with a single microphone in Charles F's downtown Montreal apartment as he tried to piece together the distance he'd covered since growing up in the countryside of a very rural Quebec. The jarring shift of such a transition seemed to peek through every chance it could, a constant inspiration as much as frustration that was drafted in the band's self-released EP of mainly demo tracks.

With only a handful of live shows behind them at the beginning of the year, Winter Gloves was already receiving invitations to join dates with bands the likes The D'Urbervilles, Jealous Girlfriends and Tokyo Police Club on a series of sold-out tour dates (Montreal, Ottawa, two Toronto shows). Such well-attended shows helped spread what was already becoming the wildfire of their demo tracks across blogs and music chat sites, and lead to top pick coverage at both Canadian Music Week and NXNE this year.

If you attended any of these earlier shows, you may have caught (literally) a copy of the Winter Gloves' EP as dozens were thrown offstage during their set. If not, you can grab your own copy of the Let Me Drive EP (injury-free), now available through iTunes on Paper Bag Digital .

Paper Bag Records will be behind the release of Winter Gloves' full length debut, about a girl, which will pick up where these song sketches left off. The album was recorded in Toronto during the Winter of 2008 with Producer Jon Drew (Tokyo Police Club, F*cked Up) and is set to drop in Canada on September 9, 2008. Full Fall tour details coming soon.

    Emm Gryner Notes:

-2 Juno Nominations for Best Pop Album

-Toured with Ron Sexsmith, Bernard Butler, Rufus Wainwright...

-Former singer and Keyboard player for David Bowie.

-Started Dead Daisy Records, signed In-Flight Safety, Royal Wood...

-Nelly Furtado named Gryner's album Science Fair one of her desert island discs in a VH1 interview, and David Bowie named Gryner and Godspeed You! Black Emperor his two favorite Canadian acts during a promotional interview for his Reality album. In the November 2006 issue of Q, celebrating the magazine's 20th anniversary, U2 frontman Bono recognized the track "Almighty Love" from Gryner's album The Summer of High Hopes as one of six songs that he wished he had written from the last twenty years of music.[6] The American indie band +/- covered the song "Summerlong" for their EP, Holding Patterns. The song "Angel" by Matt Nathanson is written about her.

  7. So, if someone could confirm for me...the pre-sales for buffalo start at 12pm our time and it's only with a credit card online?

Or also if you snail-mail the order in as well?

ANd it's $100 for regular seats cheaper for a shitty seat?

I've been stoked since I heard about this show but that $100 was unexpected for me as well. Balls!

  8. OK, that dude and the Sketchy Wigger Dealer with the red hat and his crossed eyed buddy can never come back to PJC.

Sorry! Anyone want to tell those guys be my guest.

Save them a trip, they will be kicked out or denied entry as soon as they are spotted.

Gotta say that everything else was awesome, but those guys and that couch incident really bothered me that night.

“And it is a stellar recording in which the ‘alt’ nature of Rae’s music is especially apparent on “No Closer,†which follows in the footsteps of Gram Parson’s “Sin City†to create a riveting commentary on the times, and “Shatter,†which peals back the skin to reveal a small agony. On “The Dream†Garth Hudson (The Band) lends his trembling Rhodes accompaniment and the song is beautifully dark and spacious. “Superb stuff,â€" Kerry Doole, Exclaim Magazine

    $100 in the Toronto Star

Unlike, say, Jessica Simpson, Toronto's One Hundred Dollars plays country music that's raw, real and grounded in informed portraits of down-and-out humanity instead of pandering hillbilly stereotypes.

Naturally, then, emerging grassroots acclaim for the sextet's lingering, literate debut, Forest of Tears, has been fostered by the support of such homegrown indie-rock pillars as Fucked Up auteur Rick White.

Who are these people? One Hundred Dollars was born less than two years ago when untested singer/lyricist Simone Schmidt serenaded Ian Russell – formerly of Jon Rae and the River – with an original composition over the phone. They started writing songs together and doing shows as a duo and then as a trio with ace pedal-steel player Stew Crookes and quietly issued an EP titled Hold It Together last year. Drummer Dave Clarke and Russell's fellow River cast-offs Paul Mortimer (bass) and Jonathan Adjemian (organ) were hastily recruited to round out the band last winter after White was sweet-talked into manning the boards for the single, 13-hour session at an old schoolhouse near Orangeville that birthed Forest of Tears. --Ben Rayner
