  1. Here is what I wrote to the Letters to the Editor at the Toronto Sun (feel free to copy and paste this and send it to them again and again).....

    Dear Liz Braun, and Editor,

First of all I am dissapointed with your website. Why is there no way to find out who is the entertainment editor? I do not wish to write a letter to the general editor, but the entertainment editor who would have in fact proofread this artice- "Dawg-gone it". Please forward this mail to that editor.

Your Toronto Sun article entitled "Dawg-gone-it!" has caused outrage amongst my circle of friends who consider themselves to be musicologists, and Deadheads alike. You can check on the Forum of www.phishsanctuary.com to check on the conversation.

The article states...... "Grateful Dead fans wondering how they could have been unaware of this side of Garcia's creativity should consider that maybe they were too stoned at the time to notice."

I find this an unbelievably crass, and generalizing statement. Jerry Garcia played bluegrass, and traditional music long before the Grateful Dead even existed (and before the Warlocks for that matter), in fact Jerry Garcia seldom played electric instruments in the early years. For you to insinuate that Deadheads were using illegal narcotics, and hence missed out on this side of his personality is ridiculous. I hope I don't have to enlighten you to the fact that not all Deadheads use marijuana. And even for those who do get "stoned", I can say with certainty that at some time over the course of the 30 odd years from 1964 to 1995 when Jerry Garcia was playing bluegrass music, there was at least one day when they were not high, and were aware of his "other side".

The traditionalist approach to music and performing was his dominant personality. Of course, you did not mention the Jerry Garcia Band, Old and in the Way, Legion of Mary or Reconstruction, all side project outside of the Grateful Dead, when he displayed his love and abilities with all music such as soul, R+B, experiemental, blues, traditional, bluegrass and rock.

I just find it unfathomable in this day and age when all walks of life must consider their statements so as to not generalize, that someone such as yourself could make such an ignorant and downright stupic comment. I found it very interesting that an article reviewing the same film appeared in the Globe and Mail with no mention of these kinds of remarks, just a good review of an excellent film.

I hope you reconsider your views, as the Toronto Sun can ill afford to alienate a core group of readers who only touch your rag of a paper as a result of it's (usually excellent) Entertainment section.

  2. Check out the one in the Sun..... It states that Deadheads may be surprised to learn about Jerry's other creative side, since they were too stoned at the time to notice.!!!!!

You have no idea how pissed this made me. Why are we all, always stoned as far as the press is concerned.

I mean really how many Deadheads didn't have that knowledge....... It was almost his dominant personality. Of course, she probably has never heard of the Jerry Garcia Band, Old and in the Way, Legion of mary or Reconstruction......

  3. They are actually on "hiatus"- seems to be the new en vogue term.....

Steve Gorman the drummer has officially left for the ever proverbial "personal reasons".

Chris Robinson is going to be doing a solo album this year. I can guarantee his little starf**k wife had a lot to do with this. Didn't anyone else notice the overwhelming theme of love on "lions"...... I bet the solo album is a bunch of solo slow ballad love type songs.

    Bite me Kate.

  4. Does anyone have the correct info on this show.

I have contacted the university (and so have three other friends) only to get conflicting info. It seems there are posters up for Peter Clark Hall, but the admin is telling everyone it is at Brass taps (booooooo).......

I can't find out about admission, sign ins for non students, or even if they are serving if it is infact in PCH.

    Any info would be appreciated.

  6. I have one like that from tungstengruvsten who made a funky mixed Phish cd, with all live versions crossfaded to sound like a "dream setlist".

Funny you should say a funk cd, that is the type he mixed down including "Meat", "Boogie on Reggae Woman", "Wolfmans Brother" etc.

Great idea, let me know if I can get in the final product.

It's also a cool idea to make your dream set, say including all of your favorite songs etc.

    Peace

  7. First of all it's sad to see that some of you had a bad time getting in to the complex. There was a lot of talk inside about the problems in lines, but I think we lucked out. As the four of us were walking down Queens Quay to the back line at the Guvernment a door swung open and a nice security guard let us in with no search or anything. It was actually one of the easiest entrances to anywhere I have been in Toronto. We actually had more security checking into the hotel.....

Having fully planned on heading out East for nero/ GTB, we were unsure of our plans until Saturday and booked both the hotel (a really cheap deal at the Westin Harbor within walking distance) and tickets two days before New years.

The venue was exactly as we had expected, full of New years partyers- not exactly your typical head crowd. But with access to the entire eight or nine rooms, we felt like we had enough moving space and scenery to keep the night interesting. I am not exactly the worlds biggest electronic music fan, but it was NYE and I was ready to "surrender to the flow". Admittedly, there was a large contingent of bar stars, out as though it were EC on a Friday night. We had gladly paid our $50 to see the New Deal, and then we happened to gain entry to a hell of a party at the same time.

I think the coolest thing about the New Deal's sets was their jamming off of the dj that was spinning as they took the stage. Very nice touch.

Both sets were fantastic music. I have seen the New Deal before but they had yet to grab me the way they did the other night. They use a lot more of a textured approach to their music than some of their earlier shows. The second set seemed to demonstrate their abilities as a band moreso than their abililty to play the dj role. Both the bass and keys seem to have a lot of new effects attached to them and provided for some fresh sounds.

Of course a setlist is impossible but I do remember an 80's cover teased (possibly Funkytown?) in their and I think I imagined a Beatles tease......

All in all a wonderful night with some really good friends. We were up for the electronic thing which may have caught some off guard.

    Peace in 2002,

    Sean

ps. I also noticed a lot of video equipment being used by stage hands during both sets so look out on the website for some video footage.

  8. I am tapped for ideas for my folks..... They usually buy me a few, and have been venturing too far from my path for me to let them pick them out for me.

I live for the Band, and Paul Simon. And healthy dopplings of Dead, Neil Young, Dylan, funk, soul, jazz and of course Phish are consumed daily.

I need some new ideas. If only Breakestra or Herbaliser would release some more stuff!

  9. My brother and three of his friends are heading to Montreal for New Years...... I was talking with him and told him about the bus.

If we need bodies to fill the bus, we could always come up with a price for those four to hop on with us and get off in Montreal and pick them up at the drop off point on the return.

This may work, because it probably won't affect the final price of the hotel, and they can help to cover the cost of the bus. I mean technically we could get upwards of $60 from each of them since the cost of going there by themselves would be more than that.

    Lemme know.

  10. I haven't heard much around here, and it is only three weeks away.....And if this isn't happening I have to get my Jomomma tickets.

Bouche if you read this, I will try and get in touch with you through this string. I tried to call last week, but haven't heard back at all.

I have an offer to fill some seats with people if the bus is underfilled, but we still want to run the big bus.

    Whats Up?

  11. Not directly related. But my favorite quote to have been created in front of my very eyes.....

On Fall 98 tour in a hotel in Cincinatti, six of us shroomed out trying to order pizza from Papa Johns. As we order a large with ham, sausage, pepperoni, and bacon.... my friend burst onto the phone and bellows:

"You shouldn't be allowed to sell us that. It is WAY TOO MUCH pork product."

Maybe not as funny years later, but I thought I would share. If only our indulgences didn't prevent us from remembering all of those moments when people spontaneously fall to the floor in hysterics and tears......

    Bring back Phish! grin.gif" border="0

  12. "A sick sense of melody

Is what I hear when I'm alone.

And I love it more than misery,

And I love it more than home,

**And I cry 'cause I'm not with it,

    Even though I've never been...**

    Where the dope fiends laugh

    And say it's too soon,

They all go home and listen to

The Dark Side of the Moon."

Dopefiends and Boozehounds...... by none other than the greatest Canadian band of all time:

    The Rheostatics

I wish more people would trade and enjoy their wonderful music.

  13. Now I feel like an ass. I ran into Jeffrey at Phil last week, and said (in my wasted state) "Hey, you're Jeffrey from the BNB!" It was more out of surprise to see him standing in front of me. He probably had all of this on his mind and didn't need to be reminded in the middle of that smoking second set. Sorry dude!

I think Jeff Heisholt covered what I was thinking. Sometimes here in this elitist jam band community we are too quick to pass judgement. It's kind of a Catch 22, because half of the reason we love these bands (Jomomma, nero etc.) is because of their ability to be personable to every fan, and their decision to allow us to get so close to them. But then we are given the chance to speak our minds in this AMAZING scene(and I mean that wholeheartedly), and sometimes it comes out wrong because of the degree of emotion we feel regarding the music, our friends and the fans.

"Let it be, Let it be......"

This may not apply to BNB's situation but WHAT IF.....

Page had never replaced Jeff in The Phish?

Lets all sit back and share in the groove and allow these musicians to throw it out there for us.

    For good or for bad:

Good Luck BNB, I'll be there grinning ear to ear next time.

Good Luck Jeffrey, I'll spark a fattie with you next time we boogie.

    Peace
