  2. Hey Velvet et al.....

Give Nina and I a call as I see you are booked for a little East Coast run.

We have been reading the nero logs and can't wait to see what 30+ shows have done for the boys.

    Peace

    Sean

ps. A new place opened down the street with Terminator 2, and Tee to Green PINBALL!!!! Me, you and a stack of quarters????

  3. The drive will take around 16 hours from Toronto. But remember when figuring gas costs, that as soon as you hit New Brunswick prices go up about 10 cents a litre, and the first three hours of travelling are extremely hilly and the gas gauge responds accordingly in a large vehicle.

As for getting from Truro or Amherst or Moncton to Antigonish, I know enough people out here to work something out. Plus if we had to I certainly wouldn't mind driving out to the neccesary meeting place to shuttle some people in once I am already there.

Mark, call me once you work something out and I can give you some suggestions or places of interest to stop, cheap hotels along the way etc. 506 693 5184.

    Sean

ps. COME ONE, COME ALL!!!!!!! We would love to host the skanks in our new home.

  4. In the funk and jazz category I always seem to find the same 7 titles used. Me thinks the "record club" craze of the early 90's made sure that everyones collection included Miles Davis "Sketches of Spain", and John Coltranes "Love Supreme". I am partial to the groove jazz/ jazz fusion period of the 1960's and 1970's so I can give you some hints, but they may be hard to find used. If you have yourself a good store here are some gems:

Grant Green- Live at the Lighthouse

Beastie Boys- In Sound from Way Out

Anything pre 1979 by the Meters (I forget the label)

Lou Donaldson- My Ding A Ling

    Jimmy McGriff- Electric Funk

    Brother Jack McDuff- DownHome Style

    Herbie Hancock- the pre-eminent Headhunters

and a good newer old school since departed great Canadian band, featuring Darren Shearer on drums from the New Deal:

Gypsy Soul- Prescribed Vibe (still one of my favorite "people over" discs)

and of course if you are into this type of stuff be on the lookout on Direct Connect for the Best Funk Compilation Ever:

    Strokin the Grits Vol I (2 cd's)

Strokin the Grits Vol II (2 cd's)

These were put together by Eric Warren (tungstengruvsten) who is pretty much solely responsible for my excessive funk intake.

We want the funk, we gotta have the funk.

  5. I read an interview with Robbie Robertson once, where he was talking about Neil at the Last Waltz. Apparently, backstage was a PARTY..... When Neil took the stage, he had a bit of coke in and around his nostril. When he saw the footage before the film was released, he freaked and made Scorcese and Robbie promise to take it out. This was before the days of digital editing and it took nearly a week!

Robbie swears to this day it was the most expensive coke deal, that he was ever involved in...........

  6. Your best and cheapest way in, would probably be to fly in to Moncton. It is around 2 and 1/2 hours from there to Evolve. I think it takes around 3 hours from Halifax, but flying in to Moncton is cheaper.......

Hope that helps. Flying here is relatively cheap, and so is everything else (except the gas and produce). If I hear of anyone else doing the same thing I'll let you know.

    Sean

  7. An open letter:

My faith in the scene has risen to such a level, because of fine musicians, friends and examples such as yourselves. It is a fine Tuesday morning in New Brunswick. I just got another job rejection in the mail but..... I also received a package from Addison Groove Projects, Aaron Cohen. After receiving an email about winning a contest a couple of weeks ago, I disregarded it as spam......

You can imagine my joy when a package arrived, containing:

    AGP t shirt

AGP new album "al-lo-phone" signed by all of the members

two AGP stickers for my guitar case

So to spread the karma and the tunes I am going to help in my own little way. I am going to offer a forthcoming AGP show to 10 of you, FREE. Email me to get in, and watch your mailboxes......

    Peace,

    Northern Wish

  8. I am a wings fan and I say WHEN they win the cup ( I am predicting 5 gaems, so it'll all be done on the 11th), there are going to be some retirement parties in Hockeytown USA.

    Hull,

    Yzerman,

    Robitaille,

    Hasek

    Duchesne,

Could all hang em up and retire.

    Please say it ain't so.......

And for all of the poolies out there, you can send your cd lists to phan420@hotmail.com for me to peruse. I think after last night, its all wrapped up.

    See Ya

  9. I am originally from the area, so here is some info that may help............

A cab would cost a buttload. It is about 20- 25 miles up the I90 towards Rochester, and then its another 15 miles or so into Darien (south I think). And depending on traffic, that 15 miles can take 2 hours or more. Get there early this place is in the country and roads are one lane each way, so traffic backs up like The Hip at Molson Park by 2:00pm.

If you have to cab, get out at the I90 exit and walk or hitch in, it won't be hard and will save you at least 50% of that cab fare.

Oh yeah, and there is no way in hell there will be taxis around to take you back after the show.

And be careful at the border, the last time I crossed at the Peace Bridge was a nightmare. If you look at a map it is way lower key to go over the bridge at the Queenston/ Lewiston bridge and then take the highway across the Grand Island to Buffalo, which spits you out on the south end of the city anyway which is the direction you are traveling. This will take around 5- 10 minutes longer.... but you miss out on:

    1) endless OPP patrols on the QEW heading into Fort Erie (speedtraps run all the way from Stone Road in Niagara Falls to Sodom Rd.)

    2) guards on high alert at the Peace Bridge

    3) nightmare Saturday traffic at the bridge and on the way home they are now allowed legally to stop inembriated drivers with only suspicion (and after concerts they pull over everyone)

    4) hordes of other heading to the show and raising eyebrows

oh yeah, and you could stop for some killer wings in Niagara Falls........

Hope this all helps. The lots in Darien are super chill, but also watch out for downtowners peddling fake goods.......

  11. On one hand I am really happy for all of you Mid Coasters that Ontario will get to see a BNB show, if they couldn't be bothered to see their last run through Upper Canada in late March early April. But I thought they were done?

I went waaaayyyyyy out of my way (it was the wrong weekend to be doing it- and my parents even got the cash call which hadn't happened in a couple of years). We made it out to the Saint John show which was easy, but really believing these would be the last shows, we packed up the car and made the 4 hour drive to Halifax, paid for a hotel and thought it was money well spent. And it wasn't cheap........

The show was great, but like alot of stuff on the east coast there were no tapers. So no record of that great night, and now it is being trivialized.

So does anyone else have any thoughts on this? Maybe it seems selfish, but do you think that if all of the folks who made it all the way out to California for 10.6.00 and 10.7.00 would be pleased that they put their money in the right place if Phish had gone and played later in the fall on the east coast?

    Pheeling Ripped Off.

  12. I'd love it. That is one of my all time favs (but remember that Brent is my favorite!)..... Sweet Truckin with the Buffalo reference, and I just love that Man Smart Woman Smarter.

I could trade you that show on disc? Or I have a killer undertraded 73 show from the Pauley Pavilion that is three which I think would be fair.....

  13. that is all it is scottie. I just want to think that I believe in these bands and they believe in us.

I would like to think that BNB could continue doing sporadic shows, while still maintaining their fanbase.

And after more thought Scottie, it was infact the 4 hours and the $$$ involved. It was a tough time having just moved out here financially. And it was damn expensive, so I am a little biased.

Again I feel great for all of you that get to see these guys. I wasn't driving all that way to Halifax to complain, its just the Who Paranoia. Christ aren't they still on their 1980 Farewell Tour??????

Peace Cats, I just love this place to vent.

  14. from above: Neil Young- 3.23.75 w/Bob Dylan and The Band. Need I say more?

If you don't want to then I will. Some superb playing by an all star group including Levon Helm, Neil Young, Rick Danko, Bob Dylan etc. The list is a run through a couple of each of Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Band tunes. Sound quality is outstanding since it was a benefit (SNACK) there was a radio broadcast. Something is up with Bobby D's mic during I Want You though, he is inaudible. The segue from Helpless into Knockin on Dragons Door (same tune as we all know with different lyrics- I am thinking the school mascot may have been a dragon?) should be heard by all- short and to the point.

Anyone want this one I will B+P it to 5.....

  15. Hey Guys,

Its been a sombre week. So I have been listening to appropriate tuneage........

Go check some of these out, I already started to download some of your suggestions and they were right on.

    1. Bruce Springsteen- Greetings from Asbury Park. Classic boss, debut, so many emotions. The real deal.

    2. Jack Johnson- Brushfire Fairytales. My favorite new songwriter (though I know he won't be featured in Jazz Afficionado mag anytime soon).

    3. Bob Dylan- Love and Theft. Does this guy ever give up? Thrity five years later and still getting better! I just scored 8th row for his Saint John show.

    4. Tungsten Gruvsten CD Mixes. From jambands dj mixes, Square Yardage, Rinse and Repeat, Cornerstore Stonercore, Midnite Toker etc. Go download them people they are all over Direct Connect. This guy is a budding genius amongst us. Funky, slick and sly! Thanks Eric.

    5. David Byrne 10.31.92. Perfect. Funky afro beat rhythyms with pared down acoustics and high energy.

Go check out Jack Johnson, for the new Ben Harper/ Dave Matthews incarnation without the politics/ introspection.

    Peace All,

    Sean

  16. Hey Mark (and Mike)!!

Of course you both know that I am living in Saint John. The scene here is not quite what is going on in Ontario but we have been more than pleasantly surprised at the amount of quality music.

My girlfriend Nina is a freelance writer working for both the Telegraph and here magazine. Somehow we should talk about getting some regular east coast coverage. We are getting out to lots of shows.....

Hot Toddy- 3 piece with a stand up bass, clean tone blues guitar and acoustic rhythym. These guys are amazing

Grand Theft Bus- What do I have to say about this one

BNB- caught two of the last run out here

BB King- getting on, but still the king of the blues

and of course today we scored 8th row for Dylan with walking distance of my house!

What do you think about some reviews etc. from out here to possibly drum up advertising revenue from out here. There is a big head community in Fredericton that would love the type of thing you are doing.

email me to work something out.

    Peace

    Sean

ps. Any chance you could mail me Vol 1+2? I can't get it anywhere here. I can mail you a show in return for your postage.
